Supreme Court condemns GEO TV - issues strict code of conduct for media

Re: Supreme Court condemns GEO TV - issues strict code of conduct for media

May 9 was not the first time the courts warned Geo and other sections of the media. It has happened three times in as many months, I believe. Here is the first example - actually just before Musharraf suspended the CJ.

TV channel tenders apology

The Geo TV network on Friday tendered an unconditional apology before a full bench of the Lahore High Court in a contempt of court case. The proceedings had been initiated against the channel for telecasting a programme in which a high court official was shown taking bribe. The court termed the programme an attempt to ‘lower the dignity of the courts’. Chairman of the network Mir Shakilur Rehman stated before the bench that information relating to courts shown in the programme was incorrect. He said though the facts could have been verified before airing the programme yet regrettably no such verification was done. He further said the channel never intended to cast any aspersion on the court and if at all any such impression had been created the same was sincerely regretted. The court after considering the apology ordered that in order to demonstrate bona fide and sincerity of what had been stated before the court, the respondent channel show regret/apology daily at appropriate timings till next date on March 12.
