Supreme Court condemns GEO TV - issues strict code of conduct for media

Re: Supreme Court condemns GEO TV - issues strict code of conduct for media

Fraudia, I did not expect you to be a lota for the Musharraf dictatorship. The media blackout has nothing to do with discussion of the case because they have blacked out the right to do ANY live broadcast. This was clearly a response to Aaj's brave coverage of May 12. In olden days, govt would have lied to us saying the violence was done by CJ's men. But thanks to live TV, we saw the truth and how police were withdrawn and MQM goons did the murders.

Musharraf knows that with live TV, his daily lies would stand exposed. That is why he is trying to gag the media. Like all mad moves of a falling tyrant, this too shall fail.

Re: Supreme Court condemns GEO TV - issues strict code of conduct for media

May 9 was not the first time the courts warned Geo and other sections of the media. It has happened three times in as many months, I believe. Here is the first example - actually just before Musharraf suspended the CJ.

TV channel tenders apology

The Geo TV network on Friday tendered an unconditional apology before a full bench of the Lahore High Court in a contempt of court case. The proceedings had been initiated against the channel for telecasting a programme in which a high court official was shown taking bribe. The court termed the programme an attempt to ‘lower the dignity of the courts’. Chairman of the network Mir Shakilur Rehman stated before the bench that information relating to courts shown in the programme was incorrect. He said though the facts could have been verified before airing the programme yet regrettably no such verification was done. He further said the channel never intended to cast any aspersion on the court and if at all any such impression had been created the same was sincerely regretted. The court after considering the apology ordered that in order to demonstrate bona fide and sincerity of what had been stated before the court, the respondent channel show regret/apology daily at appropriate timings till next date on March 12.

Re: Supreme Court condemns GEO TV - issues strict code of conduct for media

yea but that has absolutely nothing to do with this does it. and the current action by PEMRA is not at the instigation of the courts. So there is no connection there.

Re: Supreme Court condemns GEO TV - issues strict code of conduct for media

^^ Yes. PEMRA is a branch of the executive, not judiciary. Musharraf is like a spoilt brat. After the SJC was constituted, he tried to pressure them using media by saying that not removing CJ could make Pakistan a "failed state". Then when the reporting of events started going against the fabrications put up by his lotas, Musharraf is doing this. Like I said, this is like a spolit child who takes away the bat and ball after getting out in a game of street cricket.

Re: Supreme Court condemns GEO TV - issues strict code of conduct for media

Geo was blocked during this program.

Re: Supreme Court condemns GEO TV - issues strict code of conduct for media

For those outside Pakistan who saw Geo after the blackout in Pak, we heard that Shahid Masood got a call from an anonymous (read "agency") person asking him how big of a "lattha" he needed so that it will be prepared for him. Shame on this pathetic dictatorship for doing all dirty deeds to muzzle the media. When a senior leader of the lota party is giving up on live TV, we know how far Musharraf has gone.

Re: Supreme Court condemns GEO TV - issues strict code of conduct for media

Hamid mir was able to meet OBL when everyone was looking for him. they should have done chitrol of hamid mir then and found where the jackass was and end the whole military offensive :)

Re: Supreme Court condemns GEO TV - issues strict code of conduct for media

if i recall correctly media was bullied into issuing on air apologies by CH ifti as well.

Re: Supreme Court condemns GEO TV - issues strict code of conduct for media

Politically charged statement! Yesterday, even after live coverage was stopped, plenty of talk shows were hosted where a lot of commentary from the hosts and the opposition leaders were against Musharraf. Those programmes were not stopped from airing because they very exposing the "truth" against Musharraf.

Personally, I did feel in the past few weeks that independent channels are exploiting the independence given to them. I did feel bias, sensationalism, selective reporting done to promote business gains by these channels.

All over the world, there are restrictions on public discussions about tried cases in courts. It is not considered a case against freedom of press.

jaanbaaz I did not expect you to get personal either but hey such is life, we have illformed expectations of people :)

situation in Pakistan is curiousity for me, nothing else, nothing that happens there has an impact on me and vice versa. so in general I dont really care. Consider it an academic interest and mild amusement at all larry more and curly politicians salivating at getting power.

lets just say I dont support musharraf but I support the politicians even less s in contrast I guess it would appear I prefer him.

the topic here is supreme court which has an issue with how media outlets are behaving, I guess they are lotas.

we all talka big talk about imran right, listen to his interview and his own woprds of why he think that needed to take place...not my words man. what does Imran gain by saying that police and rangers were majboor as well.

Re: Supreme Court condemns GEO TV - issues strict code of conduct for media

possibly but Im sure there must be a much stricter procedure for doing so, not jisay chahay utha ke band kar do.

Re: Supreme Court condemns GEO TV - issues strict code of conduct for media

God this is pathetic. Imagine this happening in any respectable democratic country. Hell look at the trail by media Bush and Blair have to deal with. You don't see them muzzling the media.

A weak and ineffective leader desires to muzzle those who voice their opinion against them.

Just like our Cheif Justice, lawyers and opposition; media is all hell bent in anti-musharraf propaganda rather think about people of Pakistan.

Re: Supreme Court condemns GEO TV - issues strict code of conduct for media

Check out the MERE MUTABIQ program that triggered government sanction on Geo TV.

Re: Supreme Court condemns GEO TV - issues strict code of conduct for media

:k: Yup, and that is why the Supreme Court has warned Geo News and other media 3 times in the last 3 months to stop such stuff.

Re: Supreme Court condemns GEO TV - issues strict code of conduct for media

:k:

If certain sections of the media were responsible then they would not have been warned by the Supreme Court time and time again, and forced to apologize for their baseless reports.

Re: Supreme Court condemns GEO TV - issues strict code of conduct for media

LOL, Mush/MQM supporters have been blasting the judiciary to no ends the last few months, now they hold up their rulings as 'justice'??

More hypocrisy from Mush supporters every hour of every day
