Support of the Needy (ZAKAT)

:salam:

All things belong to Allah SWT, and wealth is therfore held by human beings in trust. The original meaning of the word ZAKAT is both ‘purification’ (incase earned legal way, illegal earnings not cosidered) and growth’ (ZAKAT is arabic word). Giving ZAKAT means 'giving a specified percentage on certain properties to certain clases of needy people. The percentage due on gold, silver, and cash that have reached the amount of about 595 grams of silver and kept for one lunar year is 2.5%. Our possessions are purified by setting aside a small portion for those in need, and, like the pruning of plants, this cutting back balances and encourages new growth.

Some peoples think that ZAKAT and tax are same. Please remember tax is just like a fain which insisted by the government to us to pay but ZAKAT, its a ‘Iba’adt’ as narrated in Hadith that ZAKAT is taken from rich peopls to distribute/support among needy.

10% ZAKAT on Agricultural production (Zarai Paydawar). In Pakistan its also called Ashr or Ushr (10th part). Actually Ashr or Ushr and ZAKAT are same.

A person may also give as much as her/she pleasesas voluntary alms or charity. Allah may accept it “Ameen”

My wife's has a relative who is jobless, need cash so that he can start something for living.can I give him cash as zakat? If yes, please give me a valid reference...Hadith or something....thanks

Re: Support of the Needy (ZAKAT)

^ You can give him the zakat money which is due on you and your wife.

Relatives have first right on you. As there is a hadith too, something like that Your relatives deserve more goodness from you.
If you have a poor relative, even your own bro or sis who are financially poor, can be given zakat to. You cannot give zakat to your parents, your own kids, grandparents and grand kids.

While giving zakat money to anyone, never mention it to him that its the zakat money u are giving him.
