Apparently there is a controversy brewing about rumors that the character of Superman as portrayed in the newest movie is gay. Also, that the dude playing the role is gay. This all started, at least partially because the director of the movie, Bryan Singer, is openly gay. The studio is trying to quelch these rumors because this will put off a lot of potential viewers.
OMG! what the hell. The character isn't remotely gay. Jesus, give the movie a break, just because the director is gay doesn't mean he will want his protagonist( in this case the man of steel!) to reflect it too! If that was the case, X-men, X-men2 would have had wolverine prancing around in a pink tutu.
Sorry Clo, but this movie does look like a load of golay. I hope you review it properly as your reviews are usually the most accurate. Don't let the red/blue (?) chuddies cloud your judgment!
I hate Superman. He bores the hell out of me. That being said, I think Returns is going to be awesome. You cannot go wrong with Singer and Spacey. Rachel McAdams should have been Lois Lane, though (I think McAdams is perfect for just about any role).
The good, the bad, the ugly and the VERY ugly.- Superman returns
The Good: Special effects, his flying scenes, the scene where he saves the aircraft from crashing into the stadium.
The bad: Slowing down and quickening of pace in bursts, not much development of characters, too much focus on him flying away to glory.
The ugly: Lex Luthor’s got no game! He is planning to rule the world through the power of..REAL ESTATE. Comics villains aren’t supposed to be indirect beeches, they have to be right in the face and always ready to destroy the world! Lex’s entourage is equally weak.
The VERY ugly: Lois! No, it’s not the actress, neither is it her character, it’s the fact that the whole movie dances around her. Not cool! She has a child from superman but is with another man now since supes disappeared for about 5 years. The new guy bends over backwards for her, but she is still all angsty over Superman. They should have downgraded her importance a notch or two. It seemed like a movie about Lois Lane rather than the man of steel.
Overall : I expected a bit too much and frankly the movie didn’t meet half my expectations, how could I not expect too much?! Superhero movies are a big deal and they are almost always good. Those who haven’t watched Spiderman-1,2, Batman Begins, will love this one. But those who are followers of superhero movies are sure to compare and superman just cannot compete with those gems.
Ok I Just came home now after watching it. I went in with huge expectations and I got out with a big smile on my face. I loved the movie and really enjoyed it. The movie is not perfect, though. Spacy as Luthor did a fine job but I just didn't like his evil plot. Big deal there is an island comming out of the ocean and a populatd landmass will dispear. For the evil plot to be hated by the audience it must present immediate life threatening results to the general population in the movie. In this movie you dont get that sense of danger to humainty because people aren't in panic, they dont know they'll die cuz there's an island emerging. And for Superman to battle such threat seems pointless after it's over.
But needless to say the scene where Superman faces Lex was brilliantly executed. Great character development (unlike in the rushed X3), the kid angle was nice, too. I didn't like the girl as much in the Lois' character, however, Routh was impecable both as Clark and Supes. And yeah, superb special effects, the plane sequence was jaw dropping, the bullet in the eye, everyone started cheering in the theater. Can't wait for Superman 2, but plz bring a new Lois Lane.
dang it, me and my high expectations. I want to love the movie, just can't get myself to. It has it's memorable moments, but the overall impact is weak ( at least in my case).
It was much better than I thought it would be, though I was excited to see it -- my husband was even more excited and he wasn't disappointed. The only issue I had was...

SPOILER ALERT
I really wish they had developed Superman's questioning of his role in greater detail. They sort of hint at in the first part of the movie, but the second half becomes absorbed with the relationship with Lois, and they leave off his personal development. But with him watching the news on TV, his hearing all the cries for help when he's up in the sky (and later when he takes Lois with him), and Lois's article that won her the Pulitzer, they really should have shown him questioning his own abilities, feeling helpless at being unable to solve all of the world's problems, wondering if it was really his job (just because he has these abilities doesn't mean he has to be a savior), feeling lonely, etc.
