Supererogatory prayers

Salam Alaikum everyone,

The question I have is, when we offer our salah, we offer nawafils (most of the time, if not all the time). It is said that these Supererogatory prayers may be used to make up for our Fard prayers that were either wrongly performed, or otherwise incomplete. (I will inshaAllah find the source, and update the post).

In the meantime, do our supererogatory prayers serve to “make up” for missed Fard Salahs? For instance, a person has not prayed for years. But He/She offers salah regularly now including the supererogatory prayers. Are these in any way to make up for past absence?

..and here is the source of where I read about the benefit of Supererogatory prayers.

At-tatawwu’, or nawafil or supererogatory prayers, have been legislated to make up for any deficiencies left in the performance of fard salah (obligatory prayers). In salah, there are virtues that are not found in any other form of worship. Abu Hurairah reports that the Prophet sallallahu alehi wasallam said: “The first thing that the people will be called to account for on the Day of Resurrection will be the prayers. Our Lord will say to the angels although He knows better: ‘Look into the salah of my servant to see if he observed it perfectly or been negligent in it. So if he observed it perfectly it will be recorded to his credit, but if he had been negligent in it in any way, Allah would say: See if My servant has any supererogatory prayers. Then if he has any supererogatory prayers, Allah would say: Make up the deficiency in My servant’s obligatory prayer with his supererogatory prayers.’ Thereafter all his actions will be examined in like manner” (Abu Dawud).

Abu Umamah narrates that the Prophet sallallahu alehi wasallam said: “Allah does not listen to anything from His slave as He does to the two rak’at (of prayer) that he offers. Mercy descends over the servant’s head as long as he remains in prayer” (Ahmad and at-Tirmizhi). As-Sayuti grades it sahih. In al-Muwatta’, Malik says: “It has reached me that the Prophet said: ‘(Try to) keep to the straight path although you won’t be able to do so completely; and know that the best of your deeds is the salah, and only a (true) believer preserves his wudu.’”

Muslim records from Rabi’ah ibn Malik al-Aslami that the Prophet sallallahu alehi wasallam said: “Ask (anything).” Rabi’ah said: “I ask of you to be your companion in paradise.” The Prophet said: “Or anything else?” Rabi’ah said: “That is it.” The Prophet sallallahu alehi wasallam said to him: “Then help me by making many prostrations (i.e., supererogatory prayers).”

Nafl are for making up deficiencies in Fard and are no replacements of Fardh. Use for fine tuning only

For making up for past qaza,calculate how much approx salat you have missed for each time and then start offering them.

There are 2 ways- One is offering say one qaza with every namaz (fajr with fajr and so on) and the other which i used was to make up one salat at a time, so for few months whenever i had time i used to offer fajr qaza and then dhuhar and so on.

One more question: Does the order in which you offer either or matter? Obviously I would care not to make the primary one late. So, Qaza first? or Primary?

i usually pray the qaza after the primary one. also, thank you for the info bao bihari!

As per what i know its either way.if you go early in masjid and has time for salah ,offer a qaza instead of any nafl other wise offer them after fardh. and then in weekends you can offer them any other time suiting you like between fajr and dhuhar you can offer say one days complete qaza.

The issue is when there is only little time for one salah , in that case you must offer current fardh first.

Just make a time table /chart of your qaza salat and then start offering.

PS: try offering as much qaza as possible like offering qaza instead of Sunnat ghair mukkada and nafl.
