Super high speed SD Card VS Regular Speed SD Card

Few days ago i bought a 512 MB Super high speed SD Card for my camera (Canon Powershot A510).

Brand: ATP
Speed: Super high speed (60 x)
Price: $75 + tax

Now i just saw a deal at another store with a regular speed 512 MB SD card:

Brand: SanDisk
Speed: Regular (?)
Price: $40 + tax

What i want to know is first of all how much is regular speed for a SD card (in x’s) for example 10x 20x etc. Secondly how much will my camera’s performance be dented (realistically) if i switch to a regular speed from a super high speed. I still have the option to return the one i have and get the cheaper one. I’m saving about $40 (almost half) so the deal is pretty tempting. Any ideas? Thanks.

Sincerely,
Captain Lota

Can you have both ?

Re: Super high speed SD Card VS Regular Speed SD Card

I could, but dont need to. One 512 MB card is more than enough for me. If i get the other one right now instead of saving myself $40 i'll be dishing out an extra $40. :) And that too over something that i dont really need (i.e. an extra SD card).

So Mr Najim have you had an experience with high/regular speed SD cards?

Sincerely,
Captain Lota

Re: Super high speed SD Card VS Regular Speed SD Card

it all depends on your camera hardware and whether it's able to exploit that extra speed.

The ATP does something like 7.8MB/sec (USB2.0 card reader to computer). Sandisk might return figures in the neighborhood of 3MB/sec perhaps.. BUT in your camera they may appear to give the same speed.. the key is to be able to try them out to see if there is any added benefit.. like reviewing images or consecutive shooting etc..

Once u plug the card to the computer.. it's a difference of a few minutes here and there for the download..not much to spend extra.

Usually P&S don't have very high speeds, so 40X should be more than enough.. there are some good deals in Best Buy for Sandisk or Kingston Elite Pro SD cards.. US$ 45 something..

If they let u try them out.. use the dispaly A510 to test onsite.. if not.. and they let u return without restocking.. buy both and test and return the one u don't want to keep.

Captain Lota,

Tell u the truth I only used regular ones & I actually dont care about the speed anyway. As far as it gives me more than 5MB/sec its fine with me. I bought a Sandisk 512MB SD from Compusmart in Scarborough for $49 + TAX in March & so far pretty happy with it.

Re: Super high speed SD Card VS Regular Speed SD Card

in terms of transfer captain, you have seen it was seconds..

my card is regular.. and its like 10 seconds slower in ... lets say transferring 10 pics... .... so..

Re: Super high speed SD Card VS Regular Speed SD Card

Besides the obvious downloading speed that everyone talks about.. remember that different cards have different writting speeds too.. not that you would need it with your p&s camera but it does come in handy with a digital slr where your camera can take upto 3-5 pictures in a second and you need a faster card to go along with it..
