A handbag heroine has apparently fought off robbers armed with sledgehammers as they attempted a smash-and-grab raid at a jewellery store.
Footage shot by a passer-by shows six men attempting to break into the Michael Jones Jeweller in Gold Street, Northampton, at 9.30am.
As staff activate automated shutters to protect the store’s windows, a woman in a red coat runs across the road towards them.
She is then seen hitting members of the gang with her handbag, forcing them to retreat and make a getaway on their scooters.
In their panic, two of the men fall off their scooter in front of the woman as she is picking up some jewellery from the ground. She takes the opportunity to handbag them again.‘’

What a bunch of amateurs!
I really admire her courage in approaching those wannabe-robbers. I think a lot of places have taken on a culture of cowardice. No one steps up for anyone these days. I was thinking about posting a blog about a couple of incidents that happened to me in London. My parents taught me to step up and help others. And for doing that, this lady has respect.
But in no way did she force their retreat or deter them. They realised they didn't have the necessary tools or the time to break open those shutters. So they retreated.
