Super Eight Groups format?

I just saw the groups format on cricinfo. How did they determine the Groups E & F? Does anyone know? I am just curious since the first round is not over and the Groups 1st-2nd place winners are not yet decided. Thanks.

Re: Super Eight Groups format?

If you have checked the Fixtures then you would have understand this Group E and F.
btw normally in a group of four 1st plays against 4th and 2nd plays against 3rd.

Re: Super Eight Groups format?

I dont think it really matters who come 1st or 2ND since each team is gonna play against all four teams from other group...

Re: Super Eight Groups format?

This format was decided before the tournatments and the super 8 round was not dependent on results. Even if Paksitan topped the group they would have gone in F group.

The question is will we beat Irealnd in the next round. :D

Well, that's good. Pakistan have the easier group with Ireland & New Zealand. So I hope that we can at least make it to the semi-finals now....Of course, nothing is for granted.

lol shudnt it be other way around... that will be fun game to watch

Must not take Ireland lightly plus there is the small matter of settling an old score from 2007... two in a row w'd be heartbreak x2

Must approach each super-eight game as a knockout game, a must win game

Re: Super Eight Groups format?

I don't understand how they have already determined the groups, for example

Pakistan v Sri Lanka (B1 v C2)

Pakistan isn't B1 as they are behind England and should be B2, Srilanka has yet to play against West Indies and if they win, they can be C1. How did they come up with this grouping?

B1, C1 etc. were determined before even a ball was bowled ..... these standing have nothing to do with the points a team achieves by winning

Actually BD and AUS were also in this planning but since they crashed out the next lower ranked team e.g. Ireland or WI were the benficieries

This is not the first time ICC has done this. It was done back in 07 World Cup as well so that the fans and spectators can make arrangements in advance and don't have to wait till the end of the first round so look for tickets. Actually it also works well for TV audience so people like me can take annual leave well in advance. For instance I scheduled an annual leave for Friday June 12 four weeks ago :)

Re: Super Eight Groups format?

**^^ so u knew Pakistan will qualify for super 8 :hmmm:

neways … I’ve read that points of initial rounds will be carried to next round … so thats a minus for Pakistan … i guess they have to win every game … or atleast 2 of them to qualify for Final …

so far India and SA are 2 teams with 2 wins each …

^ points are not being carried forward.

Re: Ex-ICL player Razzaq set for international return

I had the same questions and these guys answered it. But today on Cricinfo, they also put up the explaination.
http://www.cricinfo.com/wt202009/content/page/407456.html

The ICC World Twenty20 2009 will be contested by 12 teams which have been ‘seeded’ and divided into four groups:

Group A Group B Group C Group D
India (1) Pakistan (2) Australia (3) New Zealand (4)
Bangladesh (8) England (7) Sri Lanka (6) South Africa (5)
Ireland (9) Netherlands (10) West Indies (11) Scotland (12)

Group E Group F
A1: India B1: Pakistan
B2: England A2: Ireland
C1: West Indies C2: Sri Lanka
D2: South Africa D1: New Zealand

The top two seeded teams are allocated slots in the Super Eight stage regardless of where they finish in their group. The Super Eight stage is not determined on winners and runners-up.

For example, India are designated A1 and Bangladesh A2 in their group. If they both qualify then, regardless of who wins the group, India will go into Group E and Bangladesh Group F. If, however, Ireland qualifies instead of, say, Bangladesh, they will take their designation as A2 and move into Group F.

This has been done so that supporters who buy Super Eight tickets can be assured of knowing who they will be watching - assuming their team qualifies!

Each team will play every other team in its group.

No points from the Group stage will be carried forward to the Super Eight series.

The top two teams from each group in the Super Eight series of the competition will progress to the semi-finals where the team placed first in Group E will play the team placed second in Group F and the team placed first in Group F will play the team placed second in Group E.

The winners of the semi-finals will contest the final.

Actually it wasn't done in the 2007 world cup. The super 8 stage of the competition was based on the points table
