SUPARCO hosts UN workshop on natural environment 31-08-2004
ISLAMABAD: A six-day workshop aims at evaluating the series of annual international training courses on remote sensing education for educators and discussing the future direction of this course started on Monday.
The Pakistan Space and Upper Atmospheric Research Commission (SUPARCO), country’s national space agency has organised the United Nations workshop on monitoring and protection of the natural environment. The United Nations Office for Outer Space Affairs, Swedish International Cooperation Development Agency and the University of Stockholm in Sweden are co-sponsoring the workshop.
Around 60 experts and educators from six countries are participating in the workshop that will be composed of a series of technical and evaluation presentations with sufficient time for discussions and preparation of recommendations. The workshop is part of the activities of the United Nations Programme on Space Applications in 2004, which have been approved by the United Nations General Assembly. Morning sessions on Monday were devoted to presentations on advanced topics related to applications of remote sensing to monitoring and protection of the natural environment as well as new remote sensing techniques and instruments and teaching methods. The afternoon sessions were focused on former participants of the international training course and discussions on the experience that the participants gained in the application of their knowledge at their respective institutions.
