Sunny days and 11 Pak fielders with helmets on
How crowd trouble at Motera almost ruined Gavaskar’s ‘10,000 moment’

The last India and Pakistan encounter at Motera saw Sunil Gavaskar reach the 10,000-run mark. But apart from this memorable moment there was a sight from this historic Test in 1987 that the old-timers still talk about: The entire Pakistan team walking to field with helmets on. Almost 18 years after that eventful match, Umesh Narain — sports scribe with The Indian Express then — and Tushar Trivedi — who was the official scorer for the Test — give a first-hand account

It doesn’t come as a surprise to find the Gujarat Cricket Association going in a security overdrive two days before the 4th ODI of the India-Pakistan series. With crowd trouble almost ruining Sunil Gavaskar’s ‘10,000 Moment’ in 1987, this time the hosts aren’t taking any chances.

Recalling that unsavory incident of the past, Tushar Trivedi says, ‘‘It was the post-tea session of the third day of the match when the crowd suddenly started abusing Pakistan players.’’

Those were the days when the fans weren’t barred from carrying water bottles in the stand and according to Trivedi ‘‘there was a section in the crowd that hurdled bottles at the Pakistan fielders’’.

Not just that, Umesh Narain recalls how, ‘‘the spectators chipped out small pieces of concrete from the pavilion stand and threw them at the players.’’

This was followed by a walk out. ‘‘When there was a serious threat of his players getting injured, Imran Khan opted to walk out,’’ he recalls.

According to Trivedi, the reason for the crowd to be agitated was dull proceedings on the ground. ‘‘The crowd got worked up because Pakistan batted very slowly. They scored only 130 runs on the first day. And not many more on the second day too. Two players, Ijaz Faqih and Younis Ahmed, were the prime targets.’’

‘‘Faqih got a hundred but he was very slow and so was Ahmed. The crowd probably felt they were being deprived of quality cricket and reacted. I am sure they would have done this to any team and not just to Pakistan,’’ he adds.

With the Pakistan team asking for a safety assurance before re-entering the field, the hosts asked help from the biggest star in the Indian team. As Narain says, ‘‘With crowd in no mood to relent, the authorities decided to call in Gavaskar and asked him to pacify the crowd. He spoke in the microphone in Gujarati and urged the crowd to stop throwing things and treat Pakistan players like their guests of honour. This cooled down things.’’

The Pakistan players came out after half an hour but there was more drama. Says Trivedi, ‘‘Pakistan team was asked to get back into the field by their coach Intikhab Alam and the players walked out of the dressing room in a line. But captain Imran was not pleased with this, and he ordered the players to get back into the room.

‘‘After a few minutes they emerged again but now wearing helmets. This was a sight.’’

Talking about the security arrangement, Trivedi says, ‘‘Few GCA volunteers and a handful policemen were all one could see at the ground.’’

That indeed is a far cry from the present day Motera. About 15,000 policemen, a battery of security guards, metal detectors, monitoring cameras will try to ensure that Inzi’s men don’t need to walk out with helmets.

Re: Sunny days and 11 Pak fielders with helmets on

yes that is the reason that Pakistan didnt wanna play at Ahmedabad

Re: Sunny days and 11 Pak fielders with helmets on

yep...i remember that incident very well....infact after Pakistni's went off field....the crowed disturbance was so bad...that the Authorities had to bring Sunil Gavaskar on the mic, who asked them in Marathi, they they should be watching the game pecefully, as they are represnting the place where the peaceful Gandhi belong...so they should let everyone play with Shanti.

Re: Sunny days and 11 Pak fielders with helmets on

stupid reason for attacking people.. if it was really that boring they should have just left

Re: Sunny days and 11 Pak fielders with helmets on

Didnt Tendulkar come out to calm the crowd in 1999 in Calcutta when Pakistan was about to win?

Re: Sunny days and 11 Pak fielders with helmets on

Yeah I think he did but the match was against Sri Lanka not Pakistan

Re: Sunny days and 11 Pak fielders with helmets on

^ no it was Pakistan

Re: Sunny days and 11 Pak fielders with helmets on

Yes it was Pakistan. The game was finished in front of an EMPTY stadium. The authorities ordered ALL spectators, yes all 90,000 of them, out of the stadium.

Re: Sunny days and 11 Pak fielders with helmets on

That was the World Cup 1996 quarter final. The disturbance got so bad that the match was conceded to Sri Lanka, who were about to win it anyway.

Re: Sunny days and 11 Pak fielders with helmets on

I remember that game. Ranatunga had a huge smile in his face as he waved around a bottle thrown in his direction. He probably was like "Oh great, now we get to go home early. Meaning I get a few extra hours to gobble up some more food."

Re: Sunny days and 11 Pak fielders with helmets on

the test match was part of the Asian Test championship. India was chasing a target of 280 something on 4th day and tendulkar was run out in a controversial manner. While taking a 3rd run, he collided with the the bowler (shoaib akhtar) and the throw from the boundary hit the stumps when tendulkar was inches away from the crease. And as we know that tendulkar is the cricket bhagwan in india, so the calcullta crowd became extremely violent and started thrwoing stuff on the field. the play was called off temporarily and finally authorities asked tendulkar and Jagmohan Dalmia (then ICC president) to come on the field (check out the link). They were able to calm down the crowd for that day. The next day, which was the 5th day, crowd started misbehaving when india were 9 wickets down. They had to stop the game twice that day for approx. 3 hours and eventually mange to complete the game by evacuating the stadium.

Re: Sunny days and 11 Pak fielders with helmets on

Tendi was running on the pitch and collided in shoaib akhtar who was standing behind the wicket to collect a throw from deep in order to be able to run Tendi out. It was Tendi's own fault really. Had he been running outside the pitch he wouldve been home safe.

Re: Sunny days and 11 Pak fielders with helmets on

U seem to have your facts mixed up.shoiab wasn't the bowler,it was akram i think.tendi had grounded his bat but shoaib running from longoff/cover trying to collect the throw collided with tendi which resulted in his bat getting lifted at the same time the throw hit the stumps.becoz at the time throw hit the stumps his bat was in the air, third umpire gave him out.
