What does the word Sunni mean? and makes you sunni/non-sunni?
thanks
Re: Sunni??
I don't know really........but My parents used to say we're sunni. It was confusing for me ........I asked them what does sunni mean but they did'nt tell me clearly.
Now I now All sects are fitnah.........And whatever we believe .....If we believe in Allah and the last Messenger(saw) then we should call ourselves Muslims.Allah has choosed the word"muslim" for us.
We should'nt bother about sects........it spreads disunity among muslims........we should avoid this topic and be more tolerant about other muslims views.........
I 'm sorry but I don't appriciate sects related threads........
Re: Sunni??
rush sunni's believe that Mohammad (P.B.U.H) was the last prophet whereas some of the other sects have their own last prophet. This one group even have their own hell and heaven on earth. I m not too much into religion therefore, cant even remember other sects specific names. These pepz have different kalmas and even the durood.
Re: Sunni??
The sect who don't believe in Last Prophet(saw) has been given the fatawa by Pakistan, saudi, egypt, south africa etc........that they're not muslims.........they are ahmadies.....I'm not sure about Ismailis.
Every Muslim believe Prophet Muhammad(saw) is the last prophet..........
Re: Sunni??
May be it is derived from Ahle sunnah wa'aljamaat
Re: Sunni??
Sunni comes from the word Sunnah which are the traditions of the Holy Prophet.
Therefore Sunnis are known as the Ahlul Sunna (followers of the tradition)**. This can be misleading as most of the sects of Islam follow the Sunnah of the Prophet as well.

Re: Sunni??
The simplest definition is that, Sunnis are those that take their source of Islam from Quran and Sunnah and nothing else...
If anything is found in the Quran and Sunnah, they accept it and if anything is outside of the Quran and Sunnah they reject it...
Re: Sunni??

but isn't that true for many sects of Islam. I know that some sects (Ismailis, I think) don't base their laws on the Quran. However, most of the other sects base their laws on the Quran and Sunnah (tradition)
I think that Sunnis only base their laws on the traditions of the Prophet and not of anyone else (obviously in addition to the Quran). Am I correct?

Re: Sunni??
The criteria for being a Muslim (not Sunni) is accepting only that which is in the Quran and Sunnah and rejecting what’s not…
Technically, that’s the idea, however teachings from families, traditions, misconceptions, e.t.c. and of course sheer bullheadedness makes it hard to implement in one’s life…
The best examples would be, going to graves in Sunnis and Maatam in Shias…
Both traditions are neither present in the Quran or Sunnah, yet people practice them, not realizing that it’s not in Quran and Sunnah…And as people following Islam, we need to outrightly reject what’s not in Quran and Sunnah, no matter whether family, traditions, culture or whatever demand of us…
Re: Sunni??
Do you have a source for this? If it was that clear cut out, there wouldn't be so many divisions in Islam.
The best examples would be, going to graves in Sunnis and Maatam in Shias...

OK, but you can still do things that are not in religion. In the Quran / Sunah it doesn't say "you should drive a car" but you still can, because there is nothing in religion that forbids it.
Similarly, visiting graves doesn't have to have a religious significance. It is a historical site where a person that did something for your religion is buried. The Quran doesn't say that visiting it is not allowed.
Matam was an old Arab tradition of showing your grief. Again - not something religious at all. I agree that some types of matam should be stopped because they do go against the Quran / Hadith (self-harm is not allowed) but the matam that I do, is symbolic, and does not cause me any harm at all.

Re: Sunni??
It’s as clear cut as Allah being the God of Muslims…Islam is made up of Quran and Sunnah…What more source do you need apart from the Quran? “Obey Allah and follow the Messenger…”…It’s in the Quran…
You don’t drive a car because it gives you sawab or some spiritual benefit…You don’t drive a car so somehow it will bring you closer to Allah :swt:…
The Quran doesn’t permit is, but most of us go and recite Ayahs and Surahs over the graves so that somehow it will benefit the deceased or go to Mazaars and Dargaahs for religious and spiritual reason…
Did the Holy Prophet :saw: or the Ashaba go to Mazaars or Dargaahs? No…They didn’t…Hence it’s not in the Sunnah either…That means it’s an innovation and the Quran strictly and explicitly rejects innovations with painful punishments…
Like I said…Customs, traditions and practices have taken on a more important role than the Islam we are ‘supposed’ to follow…We claim to Muslims but lay a more heavy emphasis on following cultural Islam than the one we are supposed to…It’s just bullheadedness…
If it’s not in the Quran and Sunnah, just leave it…How hard is that? Islam is easy…Just follow Quran and Sunnah, nothing more, nothing less…

Re: Sunni??
Ahl' as-Sunnah wa'l Jama'ah means the people of the Sunnah and the Group.
This refers to Muslims who follow or ascribe to the teachings of the Sunnah of Rasul-Allah (saws) by sticking to what the group has to say, therefore what the 'Ulema have stated, what their consensus is on issues, we stick to those views. It should also be noted, that anything that the Khulafa ar-Rashidin (ra'hum) did after Rasul-Allah (saws) which he (saws) did not do, is also Sunnah. What the scholars like Tabi' Tabi'een Imam Tahawi said, to what Qadi' Iyad to what Nizamuddin Awliya have said, is consistent and has remained the same since the time of Rasul-Allah (saws) in their system of belief (aqidah).
Basically in regards to application of religious rules, there are differences and these differences are allowed as long as it follows the ijtihad of one of the four schools of thought. In regards to Aqidah, there are two Imams whom Sunni Muslims follow, they are Imam Ashariyy and Imam Maturidi. Their beliefs are exactly the same on a primary level, it is just minute differences on secondary levels to which they have differences.
If you look at the history of Islam in the world, before the advent of Wahhabis, Sunnis either followed these two schools of aqidah (ashariyy, maturidi), along with one of hte four schools of fiqh, (hanafi, hambali, maliki, shafi'e)
For this reason, Sunni's are referred to as Ahl' as-Sunnah wa'l Jama'ah for being those people on the Sunnah and the Group.
