This needs to be in Religion forum. Ali RadiAllahu Anhu is the gate of knowledge, if you want knowledge on Islam, beneficial knowledge, you must go with His Love ! You have two sciences in islam, shariah [rules, dos donts] and tassawuf [actually feeling Islam]. All the Sufis trace their tariqats through Ali Alaihis Salam except one who are certainly not far from Ali Alaihis Salam.

But there is no actual rules that Ali Alaihis Salam must be taken as the Imam, the first Imam, or the last.

According to Sunni Islam, many companions were better [urdu afzal?] at some things then other companions. Overall Abu Bakr Alaihis Salam is the best companion, followed by Umar Alaihis Salam, followed by Uthman Alaihis Sallam, followed by Ali Alaihis Salam.

Ali Alaihis Salam being taken as the spiritual leader of the tariqats is a proof that He is afzal in that respect, and some people do say this means He is first in this regard but it should not interfere with our fundamental belief which shias do not believe that Abu Bakr Alaihis Salam and Umar Alaihis Salam are the first and second Imams respectively

• I am not aware we are supposed to be ranking the caliphs in terms of how spiritual and close to God they were. The order you have listed here is the order in which they held a caliph position.

-If Ali is a “gate of knowledge” , then this means sunnis accept the concept of “sainthood”, “imams”?

-Can’t an “imam” be just someone who leads a prayer? That’s all I thought they were, people who led prayers.

-Can’t one be a scholar and develop a closeness to God and not be from the Ahl-uh-Bayt? And if this is the case, then why do we automatically assume every progengy from Ali’s blood line is an Imam, and that the entire blood line is pure? Maybe Rasulullah prayed that Allah grant purity to his “family”, but does this include unborn future generations from Fatima and Ali (R’)'s lineage?
