Religiously speaking, their doing things for 40 days doesn’t have any kind of basis. From what I know, open mourning is only 3 days.

and just to add to the above, even this open mourning of 3 days does not mean they have to do something special for these 3 days or on 3rd day only

dua-e-maghfirat, sadqa etc is something we can do anytime we want, no fixing of days
