I finally watched the movie last night. Definitely a good movie. Enjoyed watching the NY scene after a while. Ahmadi, if you are into NY scene then I would also recommend Martin Scorsesse' classic Mean Streets made back in 70's.
Yes, Martin Scorsese is one of my most favorite directors. I enjoyed Kundan. I have seen most of his movies, I am not sure if I watched the one you mentioned. I will see it if it is available at Video Store. Goodfellas was very good also.
Sadly his work doesn’t get as much critical attention as it deserves. He is more popular in Europe than he is in the States. Even though with stars like DiNero in his movies, and being director of major mega-hits, he is known more for his documentrarier skills. I think he is excellent.
NY
How about escape from Newyork, the warriors and Crooklyn? :)
I don't agree that Martin S. is known more for his documentaries. He does get labelled as having gory, and bloody scenes in his movies but his overall reputation puts him among the top few directors in the US movie making history.
He's made around 30 or so movies, and that's a big number. His most notable and successful works include:
1- Goodfellas
2- Mean Streets
3- Raging Bull
4- Casino
5- Cape Fear
6- Age of Innocence
7- Kundun
8- Color of the money
I can't believe that he was nominated for Oscar four times but never won one!
He does have a tendency of casting De Niro in his every movie.
The Warriors is a very old one. I saw it ages ago. I cant even remember who made it. But Crooklyn is OK. Not one os Spike Lee’s best work though. I am not sure if I saw the Escape from NY? Who made it, and when?
Escape from NY is John Carpenter's. Have you seen Clockers by Spike Lee? That's another one of NY neighborhood related movie.
Roman Yar. Yes he is known for his gangster type movies, but I was talking about his reputation in literary circles (specifically the NYC’s circles) he doesn’t enjoy much respect. Although he considers himself to be in the “intellectual” league but here in NY, he is known only for his mafia style works. While he deserves to be put into a much bigger league, because of his remarkable and thorough knowledge of British cinema, perhaps thanks to his mentor Michael Powell. He has done a lot of work with Schoomaker (Powell’s Widow) on documentaries. His most celebrated work was “Mussolini”? A BBC production, which was shown on PBS a few years ago.
I agree that he is one of top movie makers. No question about it.
Roman Yar,
Most of Spike Lee’s work revolves around NYC (only a couple of exceptions). He is a cook guy, and is often seen roaming around. He manages to be with a new chick every time I have seen him. Son of a New York bitch!
I saw Clockers. My most favorite is “do the right thing”.
Roman Yar, I think you and I can make a movie about Baghbanpura Mafia (Majha Sikh and the Cronies).
hmmm, interesting.

heheeheeee.. man that's some idea!
Indeed, brilliant film.
Can anyone answer why Spike Lee ALWAYS uses New York as the backdrop for his movies. Or maybe only the ones I've come across have that in common.
Problem is that i never can join ur chats bros : everything here in Europe is released aprrox.7/8 motnhs after the States.
But i'm also a fan of Spike and Martin.
The last 1 i saw by Scorsese was the one about some1 in an ambulance doin his job. Can't recall the name.
if you guys wanna watch a good NYC flick watch "quick Change", its a great movir about three bak robbers in NY, its really good. Geena Davis and bill Murray star in the movie and Bill Murray being a New Yorker does an excellent job!
