So what are summer activities that you do for your kids? Or you just let them stay at home and play with them.
Re: Summer activities
We’ve had a very busy start to summer vacation! I have my boys in a summer library program from 9-11 am (they do library reading, science, art & gym time)…we then usually had to out neighborhood water park where we have a family membership..stay there from 12-3..I’ll usually pack lunch in a cooler or enjoy there..come back home have them shower quickly and then they do their Quran class/tutoring online via Skype…then off to the YMCA in the evening for their proper swim lessons 6:10-6:50 pm. This is the Monday-Thursday for the whole month of June…Friday is a veg out/relax day with nothing set in stone except Jummah namaz…I don’t have them signed up for anything during July/Ramadan, but we’ll repeat the same schedule in August for the couple of weeks before school starts again.
On days that I don’t want to take them to the water park, we’ll go to the dollar theater or look out for a groupon for art lessons or pottery class or something. I also have some play dates lined up with their friends and some museum trips planned. My goal is to keep them active and limit their couch potato time as much as possible.
Wow!
Summer activities
my eldest is a very susth bacha who would stayed glued to his tablet/iPod or XBox all day long eating chips if I let him!!! I’ve found that the best way to keep him from being lazy is to keep him occupied..it’s exhausting for me laikin I suck it up lol!! My husbands been traveling for work for the past month..I cannot wait until he comes back home and takes over evening duties for me!!! I’ve also enlisted the help of a high schooler that goes to our masjid to babysit/shuttle them around for me if I have work or appointments ![]()
Re: Summer activities
your parenting posts are the bestest!
Btw, I do wonder - along with keeping kids preoccupied, how can parents teach them to think and question and develop quality thoughts at the same time. Physical activity is key to having a healthy body but what about a healthy mind? Sometime I think reading is the best thing but it’s so hard to get kids to read these days when attention spans have been adjusted by Xbox, iPads etc.
your thoughts?
Re: Summer activities
Alas, i’ve no small kids in the house anymore…my bro’s kids are all grown up…i must have a family of my own before i’m off the cliff! ![]()
I’m an avid reader myself, my kids have grown up around books, books and more books, so reading/quiet time is stressed in my house. I also like to keep them off of electronics by keeping lots and lots of crafty/art supplies around like origami kits, model airplane kits etc…it really is a struggle though, something parents in previous generations never had to deal with..when they are on iPod/tablet/Xbox, my husband and I are very picky about what apps they are allowed to get…I try to engage them in educational/math & reading based apps as much as possible
Re: Summer activities
Tough indeed.
Although a supporter of tech and innovation, at times it’s worrisome that it’s equally quickly taking away much of our ability to think for ourselves - too much stimulus and not enough processing time. Also a worry:
Re: Summer activities
My son goes to sports camp from 8 to 12 p.m. , daughter goes to tennis class from 7:30 to 10:30 And then we have Quran class for one hour . After that on Tuesdays and Thursdays I have my own summer islamic school from 3:00 to 6:00 p.m. On Monday and Wednesday I usually tach them at home from 2:00 to 4:00. Then we do some activity like going to theatre or doing some arts and crafts like building puzzle together or making something from Legos or since my daughter is involved sometimes we cook something. Since its to hot here we usually go for swimming from 7:00 to 8:00. My day is finished after 8:30 after dinner.
Re: Summer activities
Stuff that nightmares are made of.
I wonder how kids from this generation will be like when they are grown up. The ones that are constantly wired.
Re: Summer activities
I am really scared about kids using iPads.
