**Azlan Shah Cup: It’s not just about the title **](http://www.planetfieldhockey.com/PFH/Item-View-11085-147)
WINNING the Sultan Azlan Shah Cup, a world class invitational tournament, will be a good way to start the year, but for Pakistan and Australia, the psychological boost will mean more than winning the title itself.
For Pakistan, once a dominant force in Asia and even the world, titles have been few and far in between, and for a side seeking to qualify for the Olympics through the Madrid qualifier in March, winning the Azlan Shah Cup could not come at a more opportune time.
Their rivals in the final at the National Hockey Stadium in Bukit Jalil today, Australia, are in a similar predicament.
Although the Australians have qualified for the Olympics, they have not enjoyed success, in terms of winning titles, on the international stage.
Australia finished second in the Champions’ Trophy last year to Netherlands, and played second fiddle in the 2002 World Cup as well, finishing behind Germany.
Hence, the importance of today’s final.
Pakistan, by far the outstanding team in the tournament, finished fifth in the 2002 World Cup in Kuala Lumpur, and to end a miserable year, the Pakistanis were beaten by Malaysia for the bronze medal in the Asian Games as well.
Desperate times call for desperate measures and Pakistan enlisted Netherlands’ 1998 World Cup winning coach Roelant Oltmans to transform the team into a winning outfit.
