Suicide

We all know that suicide is haraam. We also know that smoking can bad for you and possibly fatal. Given that a person knows the harmful effects of smoking, and eventually dies from lung cancer. Is this considered “Suicide” in Islam, since that person was slowly killing him/herself by smoking?

Mubaah is a term used for things which were not forbidden nor were they condoned. Do them or don't, it's upto you. Cigarette falls out of that category because it's harmful and wastes money.

But isn't anything in excess harmful? Too much food will kill you also.

In my view (non-muslim), I dont beleive that dying of smoking should be classified as suicide, because it's your intention that matters for everything. If you were smoking because you wanted to die (stupid way to kill yourself), then you would have commited suicide. However, if you were smoking for some other purpose, it wouldn't be suicide. There would be no difference between that and getting crushed by a car (hey, you chose to be there when the car crushed you)

Why would a man be held for manslaughter when he was drunk driving and ran over a pedestrian? He surely didn’t intend to kill the pedestrian, but he did know that drunk driving posed a potential threat to him and others on the road.

well, whether one chooses to be crushed by a car or to smoke, either way he is aware of the consequences so there is no difference betwee the two except one, that is the time factor involved. the former results in an instant death and the latter one in a gradual deterioration of health followed by death.

As salaamu alaykum Fret.

Regarding your question i found these two ayahs.. for me these ayahs if we understand well, are sufficient enough..

Allah says, “…**make not your own hands contribute to your destruction…” **(Surah al-Baqarah 2:195); “…**nor kill yourselves…” **(Surah al-Nisaa 4:29).

Allah azwjal also tells us to not to waste..** "…But spend not wastefully (your wealth) in the manner of a spendthrift. Verily spendthrifts are brothers of the devils…” **{Surah al-Israa’ 17:26-27}

It’snot just the danger to your own health, danger to family’s health, the smell, waste of money and addiciton.

Smoking , a social poison, you choose your way of death, except in this case it will be slow motion… the cigarette just assists a slow suicide.Which cigarette, in which pack, will contain the irritant that gives birth to that first cancerous cell.

Da Sista said it best.

She is the one who should be on T.V. !

smoking is haraam, and smokers are not commiting suicide, it might be a cause of death, the intention of the smoker is not to kill himself by smoking, it is to satisfy his desire to smoke.

Eating unhealthy food can also kill you slowly. Does that make it suicide also, if one doesn't maintain healthy eating habits?

is food inherently bad for you?
smoking is inherently bad..

smoking cigarettes is not the same as suicide but its use of an item which is bad for your health, and is addictive inherently..

from a logical perspective, cigarettes would not be liked, but then again I am not a scholar.

Too much of certain types of food can be bad for you yes (food which increases cholesterol, etc), and can eventually kill you. Too much smoking can also do the same. In my opinion, smoking would not be a slow "suicide" because as someone stated earlier, one is satisfying their desire to smoke (to enjoy the taste, or whatever), just as when someone eats unhealthy food, they are satisfying their taste buds, knowing full well it can be bad for them, in both cases. I think whats important here is the person's intent, whether or not they have intentions for suicide.

im getting confused:konfused:…
so is it included in the category of SUICIDE? because i know that suicide is haram…
plz i really need the answer in lil bit detail
thnx in advance:flower1:

Fret

i did not equate smoking with suicide but that it is an inherently harmful object, and to top that off its addictive as well.

it would ake sense to not smoke purely from a logical perspective forget religion and what nots.
