Suicide culture

Is the act of committing suicide attached with some cultural background and customs followed in that particular culture. The overall attitude of that society for valuing / respecting /disrespecting life.

Is it most of the time linked with economic problems? If yes, why ratio of suicides in say Japan is more than Pakistan, when Japanese are financially in better position.

Re: Suicide culture

May be due to high social pressure :hmmm:

Re: Suicide culture

High social pressure? Japanese are more social than Pakistanis?

Re: Suicide culture

Ab yeh to depend krta hai k male suicide ratio zyada hai ya female ...

Re: Suicide culture

Interesting. lets say males are more than females, what would that imply?

Re: Suicide culture

If Japan is economically more strong than Pakistan, then definitely they are experiencing more work related depression .. more hours of over time, extra burden, loan pressures.. Phir i think kuch strict insurance policies ,baqi kasar unki wives puri kr deti hongi :hehe:

Re: Suicide culture

Lol. It is not cultural norm, and I believe is is also condemned by every society. Obvious reason may be failure and impacts of it on life and constant thinking of those impacts build a pressure to commit suicide… Existence of a life is core problem… Therefore… :dixsi:

Re: Suicide culture

mostly pverty and deen se doori are the reasons for suicides in our culture while failure in love and adventure and thrill in causing mayhem are the leading causes of suicide among the young westerners.

stress and mental health are the most common factor in suicide related deaths across the globe.

Re: Suicide culture

In cultures like Japan this has been considered as honorable act for centuries:

Re: Suicide culture

sometimes deen se qurbat also lead to suicide. You know where I'm pointing? In Indo-Pak culture suicide was never glamorous, but now Taliban made it glamorous by peculiar interpretation of religion.

Re: Suicide culture

true...but that happens with a lot of manipulation by others...i think we are here discussing suicide when people decide on their own to end their lives. there is a little difference.

one is voluntary and the other one is a kinda forced one by manipulation and brainwashing. no?

Re: Suicide culture

we are discussing overall factors in society.. Culture and religion are integral part of a society. I don't remember any of cultural tradition that exist today in Indo-Pak culture favoring suicide. Though in past, Satti, Jauhar were the practices which were indirect suicide.

Re: Suicide culture

jauhar? what is it and where was it practiced? how was it committed? i never ehard of it. :hmmm:

Re: Suicide culture

Jauhar and Saka refer to the ancient Indian Rajput Hindu tradition of honorable self-immolation of women and subsequent march of men to the battlefield (against any odds) to end their life with respect. It was followed by the Rajput clans in order to avoid capture, enslavement and dishonour at the hands of Muslim invaders.
