Suicide Bomber Kill at least 20 near Islamabad

ISLAMABAD, Pakistan - A suicide bomber set off explosives Friday in the midst of Shiite Muslims reciting the Quran, killing at least 20 and wounding dozens gathered for a religious festival at a shrine near the capital

The motive was not immediately clear, but there are frequent sectarian attacks in this Islamic country by extremist elements of the Sunni and minority Shiite sects.
An AP photographer at the scene counted at least 20 bodies, many in pieces. An intelligence official said at least 20 people were killed and 150 were wounded.

The bomb ripped through hundreds of worshippers as they were reciting from the Muslim holy book beneath tents at the Bari Imam shrine outside Islamabad.

‘Like hell’
“It was like hell,” said Syed Muktar Hussain Shah, 40, who had been waiting for a prominent Shiite leader, Hamid Moasvi, to address the gathering when the bomb went off. “I fell down … when I woke up I saw dead bodies around me.”

“None of the bodies was intact,” said Dr. Wahid Abbas, who helped treat the wounded. “Some had legs blown off, some had their hands blown off.”

He and other witnesses said police collected the head of a suspected suicide bomber. Authorities did not immediately confirm that information.
The Shiite leader, Moasvi, was not hurt, witnesses said.

Mukhtar Kazmi, who was running a free clinic at the shrine, said it had treated about 200 people.

Police cordoned off the shrine and blocked access roads after the blast. The shrine is about half a mile from the official residence of Pakistan’s prime minister, Shaukat Aziz.

Shiite worshippers, weeping and moaning, beat their chests in grief. Some clashed with police after officers charged the crowd with their batons to clear the way for ambulances.

Many also chanted, “Down with America!”

Worshippers report seeing bomber
Ali Ahmad, a worshipper who was wounded in the blast, said he saw police try in vain to stop a man in a police uniform from entering the tent.

Another witness, S.M. Shirazi, said two bearded men he thought were the bombers entered the gathering and sat near a podium at the front. An explosion then occurred, and the body of one of them flew in the air, he said. He didn’t know what happened to the other man.

Shabbir Hussain said there was panic after the blast.

“I saw pieces of dead bodies, lots of dust in the air. Then I heard people crying and people wailing and I left because we feared a series of bombs. People were shouting, ’Leave the place, there might be another explosion!”’

The schism between Sunnis and Shiites dates back to a 7th century dispute over who was the true heir to the Prophet Mohammed.

In February, gunmen fired at mourners returning from a funeral near the shrine, setting off a firefight that killed three people and injured several others. The violence was believed linked to a feud between two families over control of the shrine.

Later Friday, radical Islamic groups planned rallies in Islamabad and other cities in Pakistan to protest the alleged desecration of the Quran by interrogators at the U.S. military prison at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba.

The Bari Imam mazaar is a place ppl from all sects flock to for peace and spiritualism…pathetic incident…may Allah bless those affected…

few days ago a caretaker of the shrine was killed;

Re: Suicide Bomber Kill at least 20 near Islamabad

Collection of the funds from these shrine have always created rifts and fights inbetween the local "Gadi Nasheen" (custodian) and other power playre in the area. I hope this is not the case, but Punjab has seen many of these fights. In Lahore alone there are three "sufi" shrines which are fighting among several "Gadi Nasheen" and the Awqaf.

Its pretty strange that the media is depicting it as a Shia shrine, I think even the current gadi nasheen was a Sunni.

Does anyone have any history on the saint that was buried there?

Re: Suicide Bomber Kill at least 20 near Islamabad

This act was carried out by a group of monsters who are infested within our society and who do not believe in the spirit of live and let live.

They believe that all Shias, Ismailis, Qadianis etc. do not deserve to live on this planet because their interpretation of religon is different to theirs. They believe that God has commanded that everyone belonging to these denominations whether they be a 60 year old man or a six month old child must be killed.

There is a corner in hell which is reserved for these people and today that corner just got bigger and hotter.

Our enlightened government is going to make a statement that this act was not carried out by muslims and then it will go back to its own business. These monsters in the meantime will get busy selecting their next target.

The fact is that our dear country is full of evil people masquerading as the guardians of our faith. These people are challenging our very basic right to live. When will we turn around and say....No More

Re: Suicide Bomber Kill at least 20 near Islamabad

I agree,…

Re: Suicide Bomber Kill at least 20 near Islamabad

there are huge protests when US kills a couple of terrorists in Iraq. Riots when alleged abuse of a book takes place;shops are burned, people are killed..effigies are burned. How come I saw no news of protests or solidarity on teh arab street or for that matter on any muslim street outside of pakistan for pakistan. batao..laadlon....itney chup chaap?

Re: Suicide Bomber Kill at least 20 near Islamabad

a question. Do people carry Kuran in Masjid when they get together for Namaz? or it is from memory so no need of it?
Was wondering if any copies of Kuran get hit by these suicide bombers unintentionally while blowing up the namazis.

Re: Suicide Bomber Kill at least 20 near Islamabad

no copies of Quran shareef are brought to the mosque by namazis generally....the imam however has one or two copies placed around his place in the front...and there might be a few kept on the shelves on the sides....have u never visited a mosque in yr life??

Re: Suicide Bomber Kill at least 20 near Islamabad

^ ys, generally actually almost always qurans are not thrown int he toilet by US military either..but just a whiff of that..got the muslims in an uproar, riots, killings...yet..we know there are qurans in the mosques, and not a peep when the mosque gets blown up. kuch daal mein kaala hai.. hmmmm

Re: Suicide Bomber Kill at least 20 near Islamabad

PD,

Not ‘daal’ its ‘dil’ , dil (hearts) have turned into stone when it comes to suffering of the so-called ‘other’ muslim’s/religions.

Re: Suicide Bomber Kill at least 20 near Islamabad

^FG, that would continue to happen unless you change the mindset of mine is the best..everyone else is going to hell...allah loves me more so let me kill in his name...bullsiht. Somesay, it can happen through education..but education requires a generation of learning to change the mindset..we don't have much time..the end is near ( ;) ) time for some drastic measures...like castration of all jihadis and setting up of jihadi boot camps, where they can practice suicide bombings on each other between mullah volleyball and a little gay porn.

Re: Suicide Bomber Kill at least 20 near Islamabad

Pd i dont see the parallel....there is a lot of difference btw an identified party like the US military, whhose actions mean more to US muslims(or other ones, i dont the story) performing desecrations, and an unidentified sectarian killer with no other power over anything except killing a few people from the other sect in mosques....US military's actions has more reverberations internationally for Muslims i presume, than something similar by a smaller force?..

besides, its not even similar, i mean come on u blow up ppl u dont like (i am not condoing anything here), and u expect the protestors/supporters to talk abt the desecration of the Koran, in face of the killings?....kee bol lia hai?

Re: Suicide Bomber Kill at least 20 near Islamabad

Frustration is the only word which can explain the general state of moderate Muslim minds. We are the one’s who suffer at both sides of the spectrum. “Dhobi ka Kutha, Na ghar ka na ghat ka” In english the closest translation wud be a catch 22 situation or caught between a rock and a hard place, but the urdu proverb is much better.

PD Bhai, if given the choice your recommendation does make sense, but who is to bell the cat? MMA? (Mush Mulla Alliance/ Military Mulla Alliance). Thing is, these Jaish & Co are the creation of our establishment stink (think) tanks, these guys cannot take on their own creation. Dont know man dont know…

Re: Suicide Bomber Kill at least 20 near Islamabad

PD

you know why, because our two bit mullahs dont say squat about it. Its easier for them to point outside to US and say, thats someone that is responsible for our misery, but dont have the guts to look at the internal monster that we have.

It sickens me.. the barbarians behind this sort of murders get only a minor headline and then its soon forgotten. The stalwart self declared "defenders of the faith" stay mum here. At times like these you get to see their real faces ..and that pakistanis, mulsims or the "ummah" is not a real concern for them, but power is, and the cheapest adn easiest way to get it is to point out at an external boogeyman, and rile up people against it.

shameful.
