Yes. And more. It is more to do with economics than foreign policy. Call me a conspiracy theorist but at least I do not conveniently ignore those who influence the policy decisions in USA. Keynesian economists publically call for greater spending on wars as a means of lubricating US economy, creating jobs and most importantly benefiting the corporations (defense/construction/energy sectors) who are primary source of funds for politicians.
It is not the best way to increase government spending, but who cares. Not in best interest of American citizens either.

- A conflict in a far off land starts
- President makes a passionate appeal for US involvement in the conflict
- Increases defense spending,
- Defense budget cuts suggested as the conflict cools off.

I am certainly in favor of tough action against militants but peace is not possible as long as US is around our neighborhood.
