Re: Suggestions??

Re: Suggestions??

What are your preferences? What purpose?

Re: Suggestions??

my sister has a dell inspiron 600m.
she has had it over a year now. never had any problems. she mainly uses it for school work and internet. its got centrino mobile so she can access internet anywhere.
if u r happy with your current dell, i'd suggest to go with it again. they make pretty decent laptops.

Re: Suggestions??

Location will also help. I am assuming STATES? so thats $1500USD

Dell = decent, good priced but delicate (breaks easily)
IBM = solid but freakin heavy!
Toshiba = decent, good ... sometime pricey (for their high end)
SONY VAIO = most elegant designs, usually most powerful but quite highly priced
HP/Compaq = almost same as Dell. Decent

I think what you should be looking for are DEALS on the laptops. There are sites that look out of these deals and then let cousumers know. For example, Dell might have a special on some notebooks, and there is a coupon available and another one for free shipping or some upgrade etc.
Sometime they say use "VISA" creditcard and get 10% more off ...

Hence - they combine all possible discounts and post it. I will post some links once I get home.

Re: Suggestions??

oh. V.important Q!

will you be doing gaming on your laptop? (means high end latest games such as DOOM3, FEAR, WORLD OF WARCRAFT etc)

Re: Suggestions??

I live in california. I use computer for internet and school work. I dont like games ;)
I had a bad experience with DELL, so i dont think i want to get another DELL laptop. Im thinking maybe HP/Compaq or Sony VAIO.. though a friend told me SONY VAIO laptops are very delicate?

Re: Suggestions??

Old DELL laptops where of good quality and good modualr design. Cant say the for more recent models i.e. around the 1Ghz market quality want down as did pricing I supose. To me a laptop is not just about the spec but it's quality to last and operate as intended. It's got to be mobile afterall and what meets the bill best in a civialian market is the IBM T series not cheap as DELL but you get what you pay for. I would buy a toughbook, argon corp 15" if I could afford it.

Re: Suggestions??

Queen be why not look at the acer range of laptops there a ferrari version i believe which is fast as the dell xps gen2 laptop but half the price

Re: Suggestions??

If you are happy with Dell's get the 700m, its very sleek and sharp.

Re: Suggestions??

its been a year since i bought my dell laptop but its nothing more than a trash. im not going for dell again. will go for compaq this time..maybe.

Re: Suggestions??

I like my Dell, it has been very faithful.

Its the thickness that's annoying. Also it's too heavy, gets heated and the battery sucks. Can't take it any where. Yea .. don't go for it. Not that I don't like mine. :o

Re: Suggestions??

you want a laptop for everyday use short of gaming.
but what are your preferences?
you haven't said anything about Weight, Screen size, warranty, battery life....
does it matter to you if your laptop looks plain, or looks cool?
would you be moving this thing around a lot? are you planning on connecting the laptop to your tv?

Re: Suggestions??

Once you go MAC you can't go back, go with the speed of MAC5 like Tiger (OS)

Re: Suggestions??

everyday use, screen size should be 15 to 17" it should look cool :) i will be moving it around alot. not planning on connecting it to tv..hmmm... weight doesnt matter but shouldnt be very heavy.. i'll be looking for atleast 60gb harddrive and 512mb or up memory.

Re: Suggestions??

Definatly go for Ventrino (pentium M) processor. They are a good combination of long battery life and performance thakts to some cleaver chaching. My personal favourite at the moment and hass bneem for some time is the IBM laptops they have good keybaords, quality build and last. T43 appeals to me the most at moment.

I would quite like a PowerBook was going to buy one but then came the problem. I like linux. Thtas possible on an apple but then you look deeper some things are still binaries e.g. flash and other odd bits you need and as Mac's dont use x86 instruction set youre a bit stuck. Once they release intel based mac's it'll be in my good books.

Re: Suggestions??

thank you all for your suggestions. :)
