I am currently based in Islamabad and would like to request fellow guppians to help me out. My mom recently retired from a govt. job (a very senior post). She has had a busy life and lots of things to do. The problem is that since the last few months, she has become a little bored and irritated because now she stays home all day and doesn’t have much to do.

I love my mom and would like to find out activities to keep her busy and hence happy  I would like my fellow guppians to help me out with their valuable suggestions. I have been thinking about English language courses (spoken), gardening, senior’s gym or Yoga.

Unforunately, it seems like there aren’t many good places for the above mentioned activities in Islamabad (or there are, but I just don’t know about them). For instance, I have vainly tried to find out any posh/decent English language course in Islamabad. The few centers that do offer such courses are usually located in Markaz and are quite frankly dirty and sub-standard. I was thikning something along the lines of British Council or something.

So can anyone please let me know about excellent quality, neat and clean kind of centers for English, Gardening, Gym or Yoga in Islamabad. Please ???

How about doing a course on humility and getting over your uppity complex!!!! Obviously there are places for stuff you want her to do in Isb but that you think they are not posh and snobby enough. WTH man! Get a life and learn to look at people who have nothing and still live happy fulfilled lives. Get her to go help at an Eidhi centre or something and learn a thing or two from the women in there instead of sitting there thinking now your not earning your millions life is not worth living anymore. Sorry my post sounds rude but it comes from observing people who have the earth compared to some people, still did nothing but complain and now told they are going to die and regret their whole lives cus they cant take anything with them to their graves except their words and actions towards their creator and fellow humans and have nothing to show for it. Soend your days preparing to meet your creator and you will never ever be short of things to do. Trust me as I am one of those ppl doing exactly that. Im 33 possible many years younger to your mum and yet a few months back I could have died from Cancer. Alhumdulilah I survived but being so close to death makes you realise a lot of things and I now live to warn ppl that life is short. pls do something right now to show your gratitude to Allah for everything he gave you and not your neighbour.

Yeah, why not volunteer? A quick search on Google reveals that there is a SOS Village and also a couple of Citizen Foundation schoolsin Islamabad. Plus, as Heart n Soul mentioned above, there must be an Edhi center or something like that for the needy. Your mom can keep herself busy by volunteering, help the economically disadvantaged segment of society, feel good about it, and probably won’t even have to spend a dime! What’s not to like?

Other than that, if money is not an issue, then I remember there were a couple of high-end hotels in the city so you can check out with Marriott or Serena whether they offer monthly gym/Health Club memberships. They may also have some yoga classes or cooking classes so ask about that too.

Also, apparently there is an Alliance Françaisein Islamabad. Taking French classes there shouldn’t break the bank so it can be considered if your mom is interested in learning a new language.

That said, volunteering at a Citizen Foundation school, Edhi or some other similar NGO is probably one of the best ways of spending a few hours outside the home.

God!!

Now for the posh part, I meant at least someplace neat and clean as I HATE dirty places with rat-eaten carpets etc. Our religion also tells us to be neat and clean.

Re: Suggestions required

Excellent suggestions, Thank you. Actually she did spend some time in Alliance Francaise and was quite happy during that time. I think I should reconsider that.

Re: Suggestions required

We need to hear from people like you more often because most of us take everything for granted.

However, I don't see why anyone would want anything but the best for their own mother. I, for one wouldn't be happy with sending my mother to a place which had issues with cleanliness.

Re: Suggestions required

There is a yoga place in f10. I think it's in khursheed market (f10/1) my cousin goes there will confirm with her about the location.
I think kuch khaas offers English courses. They have a fb page so chk it out. They offer many classes in arts( drawing, dancing, etc).
Both above places are upto the standard that u would like.

Re: Suggestions required

Thank you, will try to check out both places. Please do confirm the name of the yoga place in F-10.

Re: Suggestions required

I don't know much about English classes in Islamabad or Pakistan for that matter, but why doesn't your mother go on holiday for like a few months? Travelling to new places is very exciting, try an 'around the world' trip? She could also use the free time to I dunno, help the less fortunate? Start a charity or fundraising, help the less fortunate in Pakistan. Start a blog where she can talk about anything and everything?

Re: Suggestions required

She needs to bring some sort of routine and schedule as well as activity back in her life. My first suggestion is some sort of physical fitness regimen...she can register for yoga, pilates, etc and go a few times a week. If she doesn't have any health issues - consider part time work or volunteer activity. People need a reason to wake up in the morning - a purpose. Retirement cannot and should not take that purpose away. Academics are fine but she needs something else.
