So…I think its time for me to start looking into earning a little bit extra these days and I am interested only in work that I can do from home, preferably flexible hours and definitely part time. I’m wondering if anyone has suggestions for me? I obviously have a home computer, fast access, fast typing. A degree in comp sci, 12 yrs experience in trading floor technology (but dont want to go back to that) and am not looking for super-challenging work…my thoughts are always on my family so I dont think I have the ability these days to apply myself to a complex career. I started looking into those “work from home” ads on the internet but it seems that many (or even the majority) of them are scams so that worries me. I’m not looking to be a big earner, I’d just like to earn enough to pay for a few extras for the boys.
Do any of you work from home? What do you do? Any suggestions would be muchly appreciated!
MO3, I do freelance work once in a while... such as editing manuscripts, designing brochures, writing for marketing collateral. But my qualifications are in that area and I have contacts from my previous jobs.
Now that's slow. People aren't really doing a whole lot due to budget cuts so I too have been looking for some other opportunities from home.
I don't if you're looking for a job that's related to your field of specialization, so I don't know if this suggestion will be helpful......but.......How about tutoring? You can tutor a group of kids regularly a few days in the week. Most tutors charge between $35-50 an hour. You have a little more flexibility with schedule. It's a fairly easy job. The kids come to your home (don't go to their homes, make that a condition) and take out their homework and you help them with it. For the most part they're pretty independent while working.....so that can allow u to check up on other things in the house....keep an eye on your kids as well.
Mamaof3 with a degree in CS you can definitely get into small web design stuff.. always some demand in there.. work from home .. and just help ppl setup their small business websites..
Mama - Most of the work from home jobs are either going to be telemarketing or sales.
Since you have comp sci degree and work expereince - Here are my suggestions.
Start applying to jobs that appeal to you. Don't focus on the "work from home" part yet!
Once you get the job - you can always neogiate to work from home. Or come in only for meetings if you office is local.
I would apply to big corporate companies (headquatered in different states). Given the economic conditions they don't want to relocate anyone and it's better for them to find the most applicable candidate whether they be anywhere and let them work from home.
Working from home is not a BIG deal once you have the job but if that's what you are going to open with - it's actually hard to land the job.

What about hand made cards, jewellery or even soaps? Before the birth of my third child, I tried setting up my hand made card buisness and then selling them on internet.
Thank you all for the great suggestions!! I love the idea of making things to sell. I;m not great at crafty things other than embroidery...but will look into the different types of things that would work for me. Thanks again, all! Will keep you posted!!
Plants, gardening, outdoorsy stuff is my love...I am defintely not a salesy person, hate to intrude on people, dont like dealing with people much at all in fact lol...
I also love animals...I could see myself raising seeing-eye dogs or something like that for sure....but I think thats all non-paid, volunteer work.
From your experience it looks like that you are a good project manager. Why don't you try to get some software projects from here in America and out source them to Pakistan. Act as a middle man and manage the whole project. You can also get some help from your contacts in the industry and plus you can benefit a poor country like Pakistan.
