Ali: :D, yeah, yeh din bhi dekhna tha
anyway, here’s the quote from that thread:
why not make a rating system of guppies.
just to give an idea of which guppie is a ‘valuable’ guppie at GS.
and perhaps mention everyone’s ranking alongside their no. of posts
(the numbers used in the following outline are just hypothetical)
now, several things should be considered:
-
it is very easy to flood in certain forums whereas it is more difficult to even put a sensible reply in others
-
active users should get a higher ranking than a guppie who posted a lot four years ago.
-
if someone opens a thread which gets a lot of replies it means that the ‘topic’ was apparently very interesting.
-
but again in some forums even a smilie-thread can get 100 replies, whereas in others a good topic only gets 10
how to deal with these problems:
you have basically TWO sides:
the active poster (point 1 and 2): the replies u post urself
the passive poster (point 3 and 4): the replies u get to ur threads
point 1: you look at how much someone has posted in various forums…and for each post in each forum u’ll get some ranking-points. For example: if u put 1 post in Religion it is equal to putting 25 posts in Cafe.
in other words: there are weighing factors for each forum.
so if someone posts 50 posts in Cafe and 2 in Religion, his/her ranking points will be + 100 (=50 x 1 + 2 x 25). (just like in cricket u get more points for scoring a century agains australia, than against kenia)
point 2: because we have to consider current users, you can ONLY look at the posts from the last 5 or 6 months. So, guppies who haven’t posted for a long time will over time automatically lose their ranking (just like in sports like cricket/tennis etc)
so, point 1 and 2 together give a ‘ranking’ of the active-posters side.
now the passive-side
point 3: u could look at the average replies to ur threads over the last 5/6 months.
two problems arise here: -1/ merging threads
-2/ threads with more than 500 or so replies: u could just put a treshold at 500....annything above will give the same points
point 4: again, average posts per thread in Cafe are counted less than average posts per thread in Poetry for example.
this is the passive-poster side
the active and passive together give u the ranking of a guppie
advantages of this method:
-
people will be more inclined to reply in other forums too…check out those forums…
-
people will be motivated more to open ‘interesting’ threads! threads which will appeal to other guppies will get more replies
-
using this method we can get an insight into guppies who are doing a good job in other forums, without them having to flood. there are a lot of guppies in other forums who are unknown only because they don’t post much…like in Poetry, Culture etc
-
Ahmadjee’s wish will be fullfilled that ppl should check out other forums too
disadvantages and solutions to them
-
one might say that people will now be inclined to start flooding in other forums
solution for this: make sure that the weight of a forum is inversely related to how much is posted in that forum: in other words: if a forum will get flooded, the weighing factor of that forum will decrease thus ensuring that posting in that forum gets less attractive! :k:

if u see any disadvantage please tell
