I second with SGC.. all of Sandra Boyton's books are great.. I have the bellybutton book, barnyard dance, and but not the hippopotomus and I sometimes read them to my 5 month old.. he loves it!
Also, Eric Carle, Dr. Seuss, has a nice collection for children.
I think I once posted a list of my favorite books for children.. if I can find it, I will post it here.

make your own stories to tell your kid. this will be unique and will also give a personal touch in terms of language and your very own cultural background. :)

i usually make my own stories. But now i wanted to show him picture of the story characters.

Ok i dont kow why i even asked religious or otherwise cuz i dont read books to my son :D
He has some...but we dont read em cuz when i did try..he refused saying aap apni sunao. :/
And we both like it like that... Ive made up stories every night for the past 3 yrs... Often stuff he could relate to..like crawling, standing up, starting solids...and now.. Sharing toys, peein in the loo, eating healthy etc... And i use characters he knows and he loves it.
And he has learned to make up stories too now.. It sometimes borders on lying but then thats what story telling us right?! :D haha

The key is variety and the type of stories that spark imagination.
I've read to my kids since they were a few months old and they are now in the habit of reading themselves. I still do read to them almost every night, before bed. It's a great time to bond with your child and get them to relax.
While Disney is fun for little girls, too much of it can be boring because most princess stories are the same and really, I'm not sure how they add value in your life. There's a whole bunch of reading material online. Another tip, as your kid grows older, after you've read to them, ask them questions from the story so you can evaluate their comprehension.

I have a 2 yo and I read her(or try to) a bedtime story.And anything works for her.There are days she brings her ABC book to me and I whip out a story out of A for apple and B for ball.Some days we make a story out of the pages a plain old coloring book.
Last night I read her Goldilocks & the three bears.By the end of it she knew there was an abu bear,mama bear and herself in it.She knew it was abu's and mama's bowl and bed,and so on.
I feel it is easy to read anything to them at this age and make it interesting and different on a daily basis and yet make them learn something too.

usually at bed time i recite n make him recite Kalma , surah e Fateha, ayat ul kursi n then he read his Abc; 123. N tell him some stories in my own words abt his fav cartoon characters like Diego, Dora n Mr bean etc. Bur last night i thought 2 show him some story books so tht he can relate to the characters.

The Napping House by Audrey Wood. This is such a calming/soothing story that makes a person sleepy. Perfect for bedtime and for rainy days. Even if it's not readily available where you live, you can order it online.
