Is it really less painful than waxing? Does anyone here do it?
In my experience, yes, sugaring has been less painful and A LOT easier to clean up afterwards than waxing.
Re: Sugaring..
^^^ This!
I make my own sugaring and store it in a glass jar (I usually do not use muslin strips but depending my mood I’ve used muslin strips and both work well)… I prefer sugaring over waxing any day! Clean up is the easiest when you do sugaring because its all water-soluble. ![]()
Re: Sugaring..
I have always found sugaring isn’t as neat as waxing; as on pulling all the hair out the 1st time? But yes cleaning wise it’s a breeze, however I stick to waxing, I actually don’t mind the pain, toughens me up. LOLs
Re: Sugaring..
I’m planning on getting waxed right before the wedding and …now I’m terrified. ![]()
Re: Sugaring..
^^I don’t want toughening up :DI want as easy and pain-free as possible..
I read about some mixture the other day that you make yourself, rub it into the skin then the hair just comes of! Lasts a week or something, Can’t believe I didn’t bookmark the page ![]()
Soconfused, you not done it before?
Re: Sugaring..
Wishkamar + Mausam on a scale of 1 to 10 (10 being most painful) how bad is sugaring?
Re: Sugaring..
Call me crazy but I look forward to my waxing sessions, especially brazilian ![]()
Re: Sugaring..
Same here. I saw a video on sugaring and the process looks sticky/messy and more time-consuming. I like the Gigi hard wax. It’s quick and clean and not that painful as you can apply pre-epilation oil before waxing.
Re: Sugaring..
I’ve only done arms and that’s it…but obviously for wedding I want a lot more done. Scared.
Lol i hope I can reach this point because right now I’m terrified. lol
Re: Sugaring..
What’s sugaring?
Re: Sugaring..
Reading such threads, I get so happy that I am not hairy. I can get away with shaving. Yes, even my Mustache. I know you guys are going like, “OMG, you did not just say that!”
Re: Sugaring..
^Lucky lucky :k:
Re: Sugaring..
I don’t do my upper lip or thread my eyebrows because they’re not thick or noticeable.. I don’t have much hair either but I like my legs and bikini area hair free..
Re: Sugaring..
It’s painful but not that bad, you’ll be fine. Take some painkillers before your session. Good luck!

Share your *recipe *please !
The first time I got it perfect, and did both arms with a tiny ball of that sugar wax. Less painful than hot wax. But sugaring technique is different from waxing since you have to apply it in the opposite direction of the hair growth and pull it in the direction of the hair growth (if this makes sense lol)
@Deeba1234; On a scale of 0 to 10 (10 being the most painful). Cold wax(strips) is 8/10. Hot wax is 4/10 and sugaring was 3/10.
I still remember the first time I waxed
Reading online reviews, talking to some friends and everybody said it’s really painful. I was scared but as soon as I pulled the first strip, I was like ‘itna drama is ke liye ?’ loll It wasn’t as painful as people said but everybody is different
Re: Sugaring..
^3/4 sounds fine! Quite tempted to try after reading that..
Re: Sugaring..
@Deeba1234 I completely agree with Sidra. That was my experience as well. I find Waxing myself a lot messier (I turned around and accidentally brushed my arm against my bathroom door and then I had icky wax stuck to wood (I’m clumsy) and then you need to remove the wax with oil :bummer:etc etc..Personally speaking the pre-made cold wax strips never worked on me, and the hot wax is too much work to get at a consistent temp in the microwave/ or you’ll need to buy a wax warmer (I bought GIGI) but nonetheless is too much work, for me at least! & here in Canada the tub of hot wax would cost me $25-30 & I do full body wax so it adds up quickly… :snooty:
When I do Sugaring I simply place a towel under me (I use this specific towel only for sugaring) and anything that drops (which never really happened actually) will just fall on the towel which you can put for laundry because its all organic, no chemicals! I store my sugar wax in a glass jar ![]()
To answer your question;
-
I find waxing hurts more, maybe its because Wax is applied in the direction the hair grows and then pulled against the hair. Where as Sugaring is applied against the hair and pulled in the direction the hair grows. On a scale of 1-10 (1 being the least and 10 the most pain) I’d say hot waxing would be 8/10 for legs/thighs and 3/10 for arms — sugaring for legs/thighs would be 4/10 and arms 1/10..

There are two ways to do sugaring (creating a ball of sugar wax / using muslin strips like the normal waxing process). I got my first batch perfect and used the ball technique the first time. The second batch I made I experimented with using the strips-- personally I use the strips for hard-to-reach areas like the elbow or should blade etc.
-
I researched a lot and came to the conclusion that sugaring is what works best for me.
Here is a list of why I make my own sugar wax and prefer it over regular wax & some food for thought for you
////You can skip this if you want-- I know its long..I posted the recipe at the bottom\\
** It gets rid of stubborn hair.. I’ve used sugaring for my face and body – something I wouldn’t do if I were using wax. Wax cannot be applied on an area more than twice maximum, however sugaring is more gentle but effective and can be applied on the same area more than twice when necessary to remove the shortest and most coarse hair, without causing skin damage or irritation. Just like waxing always make sure you hold your skin taut and after you pull the sugar wax off just put your hand on the newly sugared area for a second to calm yourself. For waxing I usually used to pop an Advil 30 mins before but sugaring I don’t need to, if this is your first time then you can try taking an Advil (it helps with inflammation).
** Sugaring is not as hot. Hot wax must be heated to a very high degree in order to become liquefied. This amount of heat can cause burning and scarring. It also causes swelling in the tissues, which makes hair removal difficult. The Sugaring paste is applied at body temperature making it safe for spider veins and varicose veins since it will not increase blood supply. It will never burn the skin.
**After regular waxing, you’re usually left sticky. Sugar can be easily cleaned up with water.
** Wax has been known to remove more than just the hair, since it can adhere directly to live skin cells, which makes waxing painful and irritating.Sugar can not adhere to live skin cells. It will remove the hair and exfoliate the dead skin cells, thus making it safe for dry itch eczema and dry psoriasis, but leaves the new skin intact.
** Most waxes must be immediately removed before drying. This means repetitious dipping and stripping, making the process longer than necessary.Sugar will not dry, so you can work over an entire area without constant dipping and stripping.
** One of the most common problems waxers come across is early re-growth due to broken hairs. Waxing can leave 15-30% breakage behind. Since wax hardens on the hair, it has the tendency to break it off at the surface, rather than pull it out. The sugar stays pliable, which gives more support to the hair, removing it cleanly. The paste wraps around the hair shaft making it pliable, while seeping below the mouth of the follicle and lubricating the hair to make the extraction more complete and gentle.
**It is More Sanitary. The sugar paste has such a high concentration of sugar, bacteria cannot breed in the jar.
** Sugaring can remove very short hairs-- Wax products require two to three weeks growth before treatment when a client is shaving. The Sugaring Technique requires less than 1/8 inch or four to seven days growth, even after shaving.
Before you sugar: Don’t coincide your sugaring during “that time of the month” because you’ll be sensitive. Don’t exfoliate a day before you sugar (the skin gets over-worked and it could irritate you if you’re a first-timer). Avoid oils/moisturizers 1-2 days before you sugar, it can inhibit the action of sugaring.
---- Recipe ----
:pCost in CDN under $10.00 ( aside from that I bought a roll of muslin to cut into strips which cost around $7.00 but it’ll last me years to come)
You will need:
1/4 Cup Lemon juice
2 full cups of Sugar (brown or white — I personally use white since it’s easier to keep track of the colour when its cooking so the colour i refer to in this recipe is using white granulate sugar)
1/4 Cup Water
A Glass Jar with lid
– Option: Popsicle stick to apply sugar wax (if you are using strips) + muslin strips–
You will need a measuring cup (try not to eyeball it, you want the mixture to be very precise). After your first batch you’ll know how much you need to make to sugar certain areas.
In a pot put your 2 cups of sugar. Then cut a lemon in half and squeeze out the lemon juice (1/4 cup) ensure you get rid of any lemon seeds and put the lemon juice in the pot with the sugar. Now get 1/4 cup of water and mix that in the pot as well. Mix well over medium heat (you don’t want to burn the sugar on high heat). Keep stirring the pot while its on the stove. Once the mixture has reached a golden light brown colour (little bubbles appear), take the pot off the heat. (Sugar wax darkens as it cools down). Keep stirring. Lots of stirring till it cools down.. As it cools it’ll get thicker in consistency. Now pour your concoction in a glass jar (to store it in for later use – don’t use plastic).
And Voila! Done!
It’s better to have your sugar wax undercooked because then you can always put it on the stove and heat it some more to get the right colour. Getting the golden brown colour will allow you to use the wax with strips.. If you heat it up slightly more it’ll get thicker (don’t burn the sugar..use judgement) for the sugar ball; for sugar ball you can slightly wet the tips of your fingers in water and scoop a glob of it and play with it till its pliable – lots of youtube vids to show you how to play with the sugar ball to the right consistency.
First time I made a batch was using this youtube video:

I’ll post the direct youtube link once I’m home. ![]()
Re: Sugaring..
It depends on how much hair you have and the coarseness of it. This may make some ladies wince…but I use the Gigi hard wax for my underarms. I use a pre-epilation oil that reduces the pain. I microwave it and it stays warm for quite a while. No need for those towel strips. It’s not sticky or messy…so easy to clean up. After just a few uses…hair growth appears lesser. The video on sugaring that I saw kinda grossed me out. The same blob of sugar was being used over and over again on the person’s leg/thigh and the blob which was yellowish in color at the start of the video…eventually became a muddy-brownish color as it started to pick up more and more if the person’s hair…and possible even…dirt from their skin. Blech.
