Sufism in Pakistan

An interesting article on Dawn.com . I think it points out a very important issue how religious cleriks and sufis use religion to exploit people in Pakistan.

I have often wondered whether the way of Sufi is the true Islam and this article confuses me more…

It is often assumed that Sufism stands opposed to Wahhabism. Wrong. Sufism and Wahhabism, in fact, share a fatal characteristic – they are religions of the status quo. In Pakistan, Sufism legitimises barbarities of inequality and starvation – ‘do nothing, it’s god’s will’ - while at the same time justifying structures of oppressive power, Pirism and landlordism, rather like Wahhabism in Saudi Arabia. Contemporary Sufism, rather than being a solution to Pakistan’s problems, is the cause…

Re: Sufism in Pakistan

I'm not shocked if you're confused about Sufism after seeing your source of knowledge(Dawn). Read Sufi literature written by Sufia karam if you're really interested in Sufism. Thanks

i think OP is facing chronic shortage of oxygen supply ................ lols

i wud suggest u to do some research then say sth about it.

Re: Sufism in Pakistan

The article is very misleading. To understand sufism, one must sit at the feet of a buzurg(saint) and see his ways. One must understand roohaniat also.

Re: Sufism in Pakistan

^ how about read up the Qur'aan?

Re: Sufism in Pakistan

If your the toronto area, there is a Sacred Knowledge Seminar next week based on Taswwuf. If your interested, PM me.

By all means yes,go ahead,recite it everyday,everynight.
BUT
Abdullah Shah Ghazi was a sufi, and he blessed people(and mureed's) once in fajr time by praying to ALLAH and making all the ones in jamat HAFIZ-e-Quran.
Thats sufism and roohaniat.

You're right about where the problem is manifested tho.

It's not sufism - it's 'contemporary sufism' - which isn't actually sufism at all.

This weird excuse for sufism is used as a weapon quite profusely to control / dilute Islam / Muslims.

Re: Sufism in Pakistan

The article is about dabba pirs and you don't call fake pirs and sufis* 'contemporary sufism'* .
So don't confuse dabba pirs with traditional or contemporary sufism.

Re: Sufism in Pakistan

However you cut it - it's not real sufism. That was my point.

SUFISM or Tariqat is the embodiment to shariat and sunnat. Its aim is to build inner and other qualities of man, to cleanse him all sins and develop a strong character according to the doctrine of religion.
Sufism appeared with great aplomb during the first decade of the spread of Islam.
Its aim was to teach good conduct, purification of self, cultivation of a religious disposition and development of thought.
It taught and familiarized people with the doctrine of religion and shariat.

In Islam, there is the PROPHET, then his friends (Ashab-e-Rasool), his followers, their followers and sub-followers who took pride in having the proximity of the PROPHET. People got divided into many sects after the death of the PROPHET, and each group started calling itself Ahl-e-Sunnat (the real followers). Then came Hazrat Maulana Abdul Qadir Jilani and Hazrat Khwaja Moinuddin Chishty and other great persons who called themselves Sufis. Thus Sufism was establishment before the third century A.H. There was great opposition to Sufis from narrow minded and dogmatic religious leaders who referred to them as non-believers. The Sufis established their Khanqahs and renounced the world. In their quiet corners they started their teaching and service to mankind, and finally a large number of enlightened people became their followers.

My take on this 'article' is that it is mere constructive propaganda by a disillusioned journalist, who is really further fueling the momentum that is being built up by various forces to discredit and dismantle the power of the current hooligans ruling our nation.

perfect points.

Youi need someone to teach the Quran and aslo how did we learn the Quran?

Over the past 1400 years who brought to us?

Did we get direct Wahi from Allah SWT?

Very well said

Re: Sufism in Pakistan

Agreed!
The sufi's put great stress on Sharia and adab. (if they don't, walk away).
Other rituals include Dhikr of Allah Swt.

The Sufi also place great emphasis on the heart for it is the heart and the ego that leads us astray!

All the various sufi tariqa's (be that Qadriyah, Naqshbandi, Shadili, etc) lead back to the sunnah of our Master and beloved Prophet SAW.
