What do they believe in? My friend who is sunni just got engaged to a hardcore sufi, and I was wondering how her parents agreed to it.
Re: Sufi's
and what is wrong in being a sufi or marrying one?
They believe in the 5 pillars of Islam and coexistance of different faiths/sects.
Re: Sufi's
whats SUFI ???
Re: Sufi's
I'm not Sufi but lol nice. You automatically think there's something wrong with marrying a Sufi without knowing what they believe in?
And clad, lol wow. What a lame excuse for a post.
Re: Sufi's
^ bhai I dont know what Sufi is
Re: Sufi’s
not What..its who are sufi’s?
sargecandy can ans this i guess ![]()
Re: Sufi's
If i say in simple words .. its a person who tries to or has succeeded in exceeding to be a better and pure muslim 100% in accordance to the teachings of Islam, he/she does not hold a grudge against anyone, follows the shariah 100% or atleast tries to and keeps trying until he/she achieves that status.
ofcorse. this was a simple answer ..it can go into technical .. but having the notion that to marry a sufi is wrong thas totally silly and ignorant in ilm and so there is nothing wrong .. infact thats an honour ..to be married to a sufi
Re: Sufi's
Another simple way to put it:
Islam is made up of:
A belief system - 'Aqeedah
A worship system - Shari'ah
Around these two is the code of conduct, behavioural aspects. Some call this Tariqah.
A sufi is of two main types:
Tariqah without Shari'ah
Tariqah with Shari'ah
The first type are deviant as agreed by consensus. Sufis can be both Shi'ah and Sunni by iman and fiqh - i.e. the Shari'ah and Aqeedah they follow.
Fiqh can be sub-categorised in 'groups' or 'schools' e.g. Hanafi, Shaafi, etc, but they can also be 'classed' as ghair muqqaliddoon, tassuwwafi, etc. Now Sufi Sunnis are Tassuwwafi and these again come in two sub-classes, these are either against 'bayah' or for 'bayah'.
There are certain sub-groups of the sufi orders that take bayah called 'silsila' - the main ones are Qadiri, Shadhili, Naqshbandi, Chisti and Suhrawardi.
It is thus completely possible to be a Chisti and Hanafi (Sunni), or to be a Qadri Shaafi, however, some silsilas pair up better with some schools of fiqh.
Likewise there are domains of aqeedah, the three main ones in Ahl-u-Sunnah wal-Jammah are Ash'ari, Maturidi and Athari.
The sufis have formalised the acts of nobility, sincerity, piety, goodness, detachment from dunya, etc by undertaking acts that make their 'desires' subservient to their wisdom and need to conform to the fitrah, but others such as non-sufis feel that doing this is either not required or is wrong. They usually deal with 'character building' in other ways and sometimes not at all. Sometimes too much trust is given to the 5 prayers to be the cure of all illnesses of the heart, (but reality says otherwise - personal opinion).
Re: Sufi's
To add 2 examples of Tariqah without Shari'ah sufis
Example a)
Dance around, free mixing of sexes, don't pray at all, engage in dhikr, etc
Example b)
Man comes to peer and:
Man: I have a problem
Baba: What is it?
Man: My wife and mother are fighting
Baba: You have a jinn
Man: What do I need to do?
Baba: Kill me a chicken and cook it up and wear this ring
............
Sufi Shaykhs inform you about how to love, then they require you to fulfil all prayers, then do extra, i.e. tahujjad. They will ensure you do istikhara, and encourage dhikr. Understanding what is recited is encouraged. They will not demand from you any worldly riches, but if you give to them it is a form of practice letting go. They in turn will give to those who need it. They are leaders and will lead by example. They will be the most knowledgeable in Islamic matters and well versed in every other matter. They will be eloquent and clean and radiant. They will be increasingly nice and well respected by their students. These are signs of the heads of the second type of Sufi.

sufi's are generally devotees of ALLAH who have left the worldy life fully or to a major extent and worship ALLAH based on their ishq for HIM. Its a long topic, anyways, by ur statement i think, your friend became mureed of some sufi.is that so? what other information can u give ?
Re: Sufi's
Are barelvi's also known as sufis? Because the interpretations of sufis devoting time to Allah doesn't always apply to brailvees
Re: Sufi's
A person who follow shariah and worldly gains means nothing to him, the same person who have strong faith on Allah and the person who willingly giveaway his rights and then feel no regret on it can be classified as Sufi
