Sufi Shrine ‘blown up by Taleban’

Suspected Taleban militants in north-west Pakistan have blown up the shrine of a 17th Century Sufi poet of the Pashtun language, police say.
No casualties are reported but the poet Rahman Baba’s grave has been destroyed and the shrine building badly damaged.

Rahman Baba is considered the most widely read and poet in Pashto speaking regions of Afghanistan and Pakistan.

The Taleban had warned they would blow up the shrine if women continued to visit it and pay their respects.

Historic popularity

Literary experts say the poet’s popularity is due to his message of tolerance coupled with a powerful expression of love for God in a Sufi way.

The BBC’s M Ilyas Khan in Islamabad says that his lasting appeal reflects the historic popularity of Sufism in South Asia.

But our correspondent says that his views are anathema to the Taleban, who represent a more purist form of Islam and are opposed to Sufism, preventing people from visiting shrines of Sufi saints in areas they control.

When the Taleban seized power in neighbouring Afghanistan in 1996, they locked Sufi shrines.

In Mohmand tribal region, the local Taleban captured the shrine of a revered freedom movement hero, Haji Sahib of Turangzai, and turned it into their headquarters.

Taleban leaders have said in the past that they are opposed to women visiting these shrines because they believe it promotes obscenity.

Residents of Hazarkhwani area on the eastern outskirts of Peshawar - where the shrine of Rahman Baba is located - say that local Taleban groups had warned that if the women continued to visit the shrine, they would blow it up.

cant reason with these types..iron gloves and steel boots thats what willw ork

Re: Sufi Shrine 'blown up by Taleban'.

These nuts bombed even the Bamian Bhuddha statues, so why would they hesitate to bomb a memorial...

There reason for blowing it up is that women were visiting the site. You have cavemen with weapons taking over your country.

Yes. We do have cavemen aka primitive tribals slowly taking over. But this is no time for Indians to gloat over the miseries of Pakistan (I am sure you are not gloating though).

Taliban's target is not just Pakistan, they are coming over to you guys too. If God forbid Pakistan falls to these nutz, India will be in grave grave danger too.

unfortunately their islam revolves around women, music and alcohol and its not just caveman but hypocrite mullahs in mainland as well.

Re: Sufi Shrine 'blown up by Taleban'.

burqy, underthedome isnt even indian.

but i fully support the taliban. they are implementing what pakistanis really need. a dose of what they have exported for 20 odd yrs.

Well, it is getting that way. However, it is not yet too late to sort out this mess. But it needs to be done fast. Christopher Dell is right when he says* 'Pakistan is a bigger problem than Afghanistan.'* :(

Re: Sufi Shrine 'blown up by Taleban'.

this is sick...what the hell is wrong with them.
Was it really becuz of women visiting the shrine or some other reason??

Re: Sufi Shrine 'blown up by Taleban'.

where did these b@stards come from? there were no Wahabis in the NWFP before the creation of Pakistan. Heck, not even before the 1980s. The Pathans are a reasonable and respectable nation.

Zia ul Haq brought these terrorists from Saudi Arabia to indoctrinate vast legions of young men. The fruit we reap today.

Saudi Arabia, even though it pretends to be Muslinm, is really the inheritor of the legacy of the pagan Arabs who fought against Prophet Muhammad PBUH. This clan of Abu Sufyan and Muawya hates Muhammad PBUH, has sworn enmity to Islam, and is eating it from within.

They control the holy cities but are destroying Muslims worldwide. All terrorism emanates from Saudi Arabia.

totally agree....

pakistan needs more of these attacks

its only by these attacks that these stubborn pakis will ever change their mindset about jihad

pakistan will need to drown in blood before pakis renounce jihad

there were no muslims in indian sub-contionent at one time too..
questionswill never stop

You are comparing muslims with wahabis. apples to devils you compare.

LOL

in whose eyes?

whose point of view?

If we think of the Taliban as analogous to the Red Guards of the Cultural Revolution in 1970s China, can we see any way out of this downward/backward spiral? I mean, eventually, the excesses of the Red Guard were stopped and Madame Mao and her Gang of Four were called to account for the damage they had wrought upon the nation. Why did that happen? How did it come about? I'm not that familiar with Chinese history. Because the Taliban's brand of distorted Islam and the fervour with which they impose it on others seems to me very like the singleminded imposition of the Red Guard's brand of communism. Eventually, the Chinese people managed to stop the madness. How can Pakistanis and other Muslims throwoff the Jihadist bullies who are seeking to force their vision of Islam on them?

a sane person's. :)
