Pardon my ignorance but what exactly is a sufi-saab? I hope it’s not something un-Islamic/purely cultural

depends on who's saying it.
Sufi'ism is a very broad blanket term and covers people who were very major and respectable religious figures, responsible to a large extent for the spread of Islam around the world, particularly india and pakistan. It also covers kooks and people who own tigers and get respect from people merely because they own tigers.
Basically the mystic side of Islam.
Certain types of Muslims really dislike sufis and the entire concept of sufism (particularly because sufis often used to poke fun at Mullahs), they can use sufi in a derogatory way. plus because sufis are supposed to be unconscious of wordly things and a little tun, someone who is acting irrationally can be called sufi sahab in jest.

Well I"m hoping it's not a bad thing coz I just found out my dad became sufi saab in pakistan. Now i dunno if it was a joke (coz i'm really gullible and will believe anything) or serious. I'll ask my dad soon.

Yeah it's confirmed he really is a sufi saab. Apparently the other sufi saab passed down his topee to my dad. :)

People with a small beard normally like the beard which our shia brothers sport.People with small beard are called Sufi saab.Not necessarily religious people are called sufi no way linked to sufi islam.

Armughal I have no idea, that's why I'm asking here :p But no it was a formal ceremony so I haerd... the original sufi saab passed on his pagree to my dad in aroomful of ppl n said that now he's their ustaad

Lahori... no sufi saab is a religious thing but i think it's cultural as well.. i just wanna make sure its not anything bad :)

As SyedPK mentioned in pakistan when someone starts growing beard he is called as becoming "Sufi Saab", must be her father started growing beard.
