Bear in mind that the Pakistan Army is not trained for counter-insurgency - it is trained and drilled to fight conventional war. In conventional war you don't send in the tanks and infantry into a zone until you have prepared the area with artillery bombardment to disrupt any enemy who may be present.
The Taliban have a presence in Maidan so the area would have been bombarded before sending in soldiers.
So, when do they plan on learning counterinsurgency tactics? Is this after taliban gain control of the entire country?
Re: Sufi Muhammad's eldest son killed in Swat shelling
only 14 kids he have ??? that's all .. i thought.. mullah's like sufi.. had crossed minimum 20+ years ago.. but anyway .. waiting for the news: Sufi jahanam-wasaaaal ho gaya.. aur us ki lash ko Swat main chowk mein taang diya gaya !

Do you want Pakistan's army to focus on being good at classic military conventional combat?
OR
Do you want the army to focus on counterinsurgency?
OR
Do you want the army to spend half its time practicing one style and half practicing another style and thus not be as effetive at either?
There is no right or wrong answer. Learning effective counterinsurgency tactics takes years (it took the US three years during a full blown insurgency; learning in peacetime would take even longer as you can't immediately try out new theories). Not just that, but learning counterinsurgency tactics takes time away from classic open warfare training and thus hurts the army's ability to wage a conventional war against another country. Retraining to full effectiveness then takes years
great!..but the thing is y r we giving so much impotance to these good for nothing people..now that so many people have fled these areas y not nuke it n end the story
Re: Sufi Muhammad's eldest son killed in Swat shelling
Why do desi people think nukes are the solution to everything? I remember in the days of 2001 when people on both sides were practically clamouring for nuclear war....

Re: Sufi Muhammad's eldest son killed in Swat shelling
^^ Their is a difference between elected government & dictatorship. Their is consensus among vast majority of Pakistan about this operation, so i am not seeing any bad outcome at the levels of Lal Mosque.
Re: Sufi Muhammad's eldest son killed in Swat shelling
firenze, can you back that claim about the consensus amongst the vast majority with credible proof? I want to be sure whether the country is or isnt behind this operation.
Re: Sufi Muhammad's eldest son killed in Swat shelling
^ Please prove to me where I said I love the voting credibility of PA. With people like you on board, that's the last thing I would take as authentic. p.s. im still waiting for proof on that dr afia not being a pakistani citizen bongi claim.
Re: Sufi Muhammad's eldest son killed in Swat shelling
the current operation is spported by the elected representatives of the people is it not? I dont know if parliament passed a resolution on it. But if it did then we can say the nation is behind this operation.
Re: Sufi Muhammad's eldest son killed in Swat shelling
Some people are grudgingly on board because even they cannot defend taliban actions this time, but taliban still command a lot of sympathy among the right wingers.
Personally, I don't think pakistan has the backbone for a protracted war.

Whatever you guys may think their motives, the MQM has taken a immediate and clear stand against the Taliban. Something that PPP, PML-N failed to do over the last two decades and with their inaction created this problem.
I dont think it will be a protracted war in Malakand, the fighters will be flushed into FATA and then maybe a peace deal to let them have their way over there when the proper NWFP area is back under federal control.
Wine : it wont take two decades, this is not the first time it has happened. There was jihad to create a totalitarian Islamic state in the time of Ranjit Singh as well, and it was defeated with the help of local pashtuns.
