Arresting of this 70-80 years old man will not serve any purpose. He should not be arrested for reasons mentioned below in the news item. What government wants to achieve by arresting this old man?

PESHAWAR: Pakistani police on Sunday arrested pro-Taliban cleric Sufi Muhammad, who brokered a peace deal between the government and militants in the Swat Valley that has since faltered.

The deal collapsed in April when the Taliban advanced into neighboring districts, triggering a military offensive that prompted a spree of retaliatory attacks by militants in the northwest and beyond.

Mian Iftikhar, information minister for the North West Frontier Province, said Muhammad was arrested for encouraging violence and terrorism.

‘Instead of keeping his promises by taking steps for the sake of peace, and speaking out against terrorism, he did not utter a single word against terrorists,’ Iftikhar said in a news conference, adding that the cleric’s stance ‘encouraged terrorism. It encouraged violence.’

The military offensive in the Swat Valley and surrounding areas led some two million people to flee their homes and take refuge in camps and with relatives across the country. In the last two weeks, hundreds of thousands have been returning home as the offensive winds down, although sporadic fighting persists.

Iftikhar accused Muhammad of ‘again preparing to get more people killed’ and said: ‘We cannot let it happen. The price we have paid for the sake of peace, we cannot allow any person to disturb the peace.’

Iftikhar said Muhammad would be investigated regarding his role as mediator between the government and the Taliban, and that a case would then be made based on that investigation.

Muhammad’s son Azmat Ullah, 12, told The Associated Press that police arrived at his home in Sethi on the outskirts of Peshawar in four vans and took away his father and three brothers.

‘My father and brothers went with them without offering any resistance,’ Ullah said.

One witness, local resident Mohammad Arif, said police fired a shot in the air to disperse a crowd that had gathered during the operation to arrest the cleric. — AP

He is not just any old man. He led thousands of pakistanis to their deaths into Afghanistan after 2001 invasion when the taliban afghan leaders surrendered to Dostum and were let go, while the pakistanis that sufi had pushed over the border where put inside containers and most suffocated to death. Sufi and the Afghan talib leaders ran away, while the rest of the pakistani canon fodder were bombed by B-52s.

And let's forget his encouraging his son in law mullah radio to kill people in Swat. Sufi is a war criminal, but you won't hear our great SC justices paying any attention to this terrorist leader.

^^^ he was arrested and jailed. The ANP govt let him out few months back to help resolve problems in Swat. As part of the deal he was suppose shun the violence and help govt restore peace & he hasn't. I think that is why he was re-arrested.

Is this the same Sufi Mohammad who said,

All the Political Parties are Kafir ( something like that)

All judges in Pakistan are Kafir ( something of this sort)

Lawyers are not allowed ( something like this)

and other silly arguments and yet he is going to hire the lawyers in the same court under the same parliament...

This is the same Sufi who send other people's children to death by brain washing them into suicide bombing and killing innocent people. He should get what's coming to him and I am sure he would not defend himself in a kafir court, rather accept death according to his belief. But you know what this coward will hire all the lawyers he can and employ all tactics to keep himself alive. Characterless moron.

Sufi Mohammad was released in early 2008, remember it was the time when CJ iftikhar was out on the road and your favourite Dogar was in ...

last but not least, it is up to Security forces to put up case backed by the evidences against Sufi mohammad and other. In the civilized society Judiciary deliver verdicts on the basis of evidence and not because they THINK SO..
