Sudan troops withdraw from Darfur
ABUJA (Reuters) - The African Union’s commander in Sudan’s troubled Darfur region has confirmed that Khartoum is withdrawing
troops ahead of a deadline to end ceasefire breaches, says an AU spokesman.
“The government instructed its military commanders yesterday to end the campaign and withdraw troops to their former positions,”
spokesman Assane Ba told Reuters, ahead of a deadline on Saturday afternoon.
“General Okonkwo (AU commander in Darfur) has confirmed that troops withdrawal by the government was already under way, and
we will meet later today to review the situation on the ground.”
He added that Khartoum had complained that the process was been slowed by rebel attacks on the retreating troops.
Darfur rebels suspended peace talks in Nigeria on Monday to protest against Khartoum’s offensive in the vast arid region.
Ba said the talks would resume if the ceasefire commission led by General Festus Okonkwo confirmed later on Saturday that the
security situation in Darfur had improved.
The rebel groups denied Sudan was pulling back its troops.
