Many of us plan to return to Pakistan one day, and its always good to share some stories of success… You never know, something out of these stories might come handy for you!
I know this guy who was a senior to me in Alevels, went to UofTexas, Austin, and got a CS undergrad degree. He worked in some software company for 3-4ars (IBM I think) and then came back to Pakistan, but he had alot of interactions with influential people in the industry while he was working in the US, decision makers mostly. When he returned to Pakistan, he actually setup a s/w development center in his dad’s flour mill, and hired about 15 students from a decent school, all software guys, and got in touch with his contacts in the US. He is doing really good now, he gets around 30-40 software applications to develop every month, and is now making big bucks, and hes investing it further, as he didnt have to pay anything upfront in the beginning thanks to his dad’s mill (no setup costs, no rent etc). All he has to worry about is paying a monthly salary to his employees but his profit margins are way beyond that. For an undergraduate with 3-4 years of experience, this is pretty decent isnt it?

:k:
Pakistan needs that! Hopefully, one day, he will hire someone for business development here & add consulting to his services to send his employees over here.
Re: Success stories in Pakistan for returning students
good pal of mine went back to pak after his undergrad, joined a company that had just started then, rose very quickly to VP and then the region director for one of the 5 global regions that were set up pacific, the company became one of the top Pakistani software houses. and now he runs one of those regions as a senior VP. but to do that he had to move to that region
Re: Success stories in Pakistan for returning students
Also wanted to add, ith all the students on J1s, and HEC scholarships and fullbrights right now, the previous notion of brain drain no longer holds true, all these J1ers will have to go back to Pakistan which is an awesome sign for the future of higher education in the country, and Dr. Atta and the MOST, HEC deserve special credit for this.
Re: Success stories in Pakistan for returning students
Nice to know that....
Not only in Pakistan, same is true here in India...one guy I know personally has returned to India from Gulf, with better pays. Me too looking for similiar opportunities.
"Brain drain" is more in South Asia, and let's hope the same can be reversed.
Re: Success stories in Pakistan for returning students
one of my friend came here with me, i started studies for a while and then working for a large consulting, he done some consulting in revenue assurance area. went back two years back, sat up a company from home initially and started providing services to clients in UK and also providing support to billing area to Telenor and other new telecom operators.
now he moved to proper office in one of the new high rises in Lahore, company size grew to 40+ and still growing. pushing me always to come back. and i will take the leap back home in another couple of years.
Re: Success stories in Pakistan for returning students
So basically if a person has around 1 crore initially, good education (work experience at a small company abroad, management skills or observing his management at previous work place with great interest), hire some local talent, he has a very good chance to grow. This trend was actually shaped by some engineering graduates from Georgie Tech back in the late 90s, some of them in the army who came back from their HEC PhD scholarships, and apart from fullfilling their bond (to teach in pakistan), they opened up side companies, avaz networks being one of them.
Re: Success stories in Pakistan for returning students
as far as success stories of people I will also give my dad's example, while due to political problems and all he never laucnhed the business he wanted to, he worked with the top company in his field, served as an advisor to world bank, asian bank, and to every single Pakisani govt from 1985- 2002. He retired after serving as the CEO of a Pakistan based international company. He was in general happy, and felt that from a career perspective he went as high as he wanted to go.
