hi there .. guys can u pls tell me susbtitute for poppy seeds (khash khaash). i really wanna make bihari boti and khash khaash is an integral part of it but in dubai its illegal.. they say it hs some nasha in it.. dunno the exact reason so i cant even bring it from pak.. here they dun sell poppy seeds also. do u know any thing else that tastes similar to it? my mom said peanut paste? wot do u guys say?

thx sara. i just searched the net and many sites are sayin sesame seed but many are sayin they are totally different things also.. so m a bit confused. i mite use cashew nut paste though

Sesame seeds are different.
I cant say what exactly do poppy seeds do to the flavor. They are difficult to be ground to paste as well. I always skip them, unless i am making sardai.

mall, I think the "nasha" is that poppy seeds are the source of opium, but I didn't realize it was enough to make them illegal in some states!
Do you think you can make it without the seeds and without a substitute?

lolz Mostar!!!! tum bi na... sure why not.. koi kehnay wali bat hia.. even if u wudnt know i ll tell u :D i will myself make it for first time. have seen some recipes of bihari boti ill take a lil bit from each recipe and make it IA... so its upto u i can give u recipe AFTER makin or before.. anything u like! waise poppy seeds ka substitute cashewnuts hosakta hia. i think sesame seed is not gud alternative

sahar m sure i can make it without it too but i really wanna put it. bihari boti ki jaan hia khash khaash. anyway i got to know they are sellin it somewhere where i live ... its a bit far but ill surely go. ive bought cashew nuts just in case too if i m unable to find. will also b making a paste of bhuna chana and then put in the marination. will share recipe IA if its gud

my mom makes something called khash khash kee chutney (its white, pasty, grainy, spicey, chutney consistency stuff) that she serves with ghee lagee baisan kee rotee. You got to eat that stuff to appreciate that. In my humble opinion, that combo is much better than maki kee rotee and saag combo.

yeahhh tell me abt it!!! i also make a chatni for besan ki roti but its not that difficult. just take red chilli powder, garlic, zeera (mash up the last 2 ingredients).. tk a pan put oil, finely chopped onion and red chilli powder(mixed with water) n the mashed up garlic and zeera. it tastes yum and is so simple. love it wid besan ki roti! TLK wud u know the recipe of ur mom's chutney

mall.... kash kash should be easily avaialble in a desi store... just ask the person, they dont put it out on the shelves but under teh counter... ask and im sure you will get a pack. crazy expensive, but avaialble.. it has to be.. i mean if you can get it in arabia.. i dont see why you cant in dubai :o

no khawateen seriously no.. one man here told me u can get in some market but hubs is not takin me there :( i m sure underground they must have it. my hubs gave me a gud hearing when i said i wana bring sum from karachi.. he said the airport officials will put me in jail or interogate me. i found that tooooooo funny cus how is it possible. i know cus i m educated abt it but wot if someone else dusnt know to which he replied everythin KNOWS khash khaash is not allowed. didnt wanna argue further but i didnt agree with him... i m sure no one can interrogate me for just bringin sum damn poppy seeds!!!
