r we supposed to give receipts if tenant pays us by cheque?
No since you are landlord you have more rights.Explain little bit more scenario; what is going wrong?
PS. YOu have a written contract with tenant then why do you need receipts.
no we dont need it..the tenant keeps saying give me receipts..u people dont give us receipts
Like what you didn't need it ; you didn't have written contract and why is tenant asking for receipts. Any reasons he is saying or mentioning?

Receipts valid only after realisation of cheque!!!!
make sure you have Cheque number on the receipt and to be safe photocopy cheque and staple it with receipt and a copy of receipt ..

Why not issue a receipt? It serves as proof of the tenant having made the payment and your having received it. It costs money to get the bank to provide a copy of the cancelled cheque - issuing a receipt is easier for the tenant.
