Right now, I have 4 Gislaved Nordfrost tires on 16 inch steel rims on my car.
In my storage locker, I have 4 Pirellis on 17 inch alloy rims.
Is getting the 4 steel rims & Gislaveds off my car and replaced with the 4 alloys & Pirellis something a guy can reasonably expect to do on his own with just a jack and the right wrench, or should I take it to a mechanic to have it done?
Jack and wrench, no biggie. No matter how you cut it, it is still only four or five bolts. Make sure you retighten the nuts in a star pattern. The tires are ON the rims right? make sure there is air pressure in the tires BEFORE you put them on, otherwise you are essentially installing a flat on your car...... Do you know how to "chock" the car wheels so that the car won't move on the jack? Also, do you have locking nuts, or just normal nuts?
NO! you can change it yourself easily ......but that'd be quite stupid in this case considering you're going to an entirely new set. You hace to get the tires balanced and if necessary have the wheels aligned.
The 17 inch alloys are not entirely new. They were on the car at the dealership, I just had taken them off to get the (entirely new) steel rims with winter tires installed. The Volvo dealership balanced and aligned the new tire/rims at the time.
