studying in China

anyone knows how respected are their degrees and what is the credibility of it all later when finding a job?

I am hearing mixed stories .. my friends younger brother is in lahore , got to some mediocre uni that had a branch in china and now flying off to china … the problem is that his family believes he wont get a job that easily when he returns to pakistan coz nobody cares about a chinese degree unless its from a commendable uni..

what say?

Re: studying in China

dude i dont know much but i do know there is this business school in HongKong that comes in the top 50 business schools in the world ... you can always consult the IBA site for rankings ... its somewhere on the index ... the business school rankings show hongkong business school above NUS which we think is the best in the region

Re: studying in China

It depends on the university and the department. You need to be very sure that it is a university that is ranked well. Otherwise, its just fun being in china :D

chinese degrees are same value as pakistanis

please explain bit more about fun thing

Re: studying in China

No, some chinese universities are recognised worldwide. I don't know much about other departments, but one business school is recognised by AACSB which is sort of an 'elite' group of business schools in the world.

Fun part... well, tahzeeb is baat ki ijazat nahee daitey key main GS pey explain karon. ;)

The difficult parts of studying in China are the language and food. Very few people (on the streets) know any english and food, well, you might like daddu fry with snake soup :P

irshad irshad ... dude china is the next big thing ... that is why i think we should all learn Chinese ... IBA has started offering Chinese to their students in this context

Haha chinese universities are pretty awsome. I spent time at Xingxiang college, it was not a degree level course but it was nice to learn about something new.
Chinese universities are no different to those of Pakistan and India. Most of China's top Uni's are among the best in the world.

Hong Kong and shanghai are obviously the best sectors for business studies, the Shanghai University of economics is meant to be as good if not better than Cambridge's financial/bussiness divisions.

Biejing and Nanjing are the classical Universities of China, they suit the academics who tend to lean towards Humanities and cultural subjects.

Southern Chinese Universities are meant to be the best for Science subjects. Hunan Uni (where some of my friends went) is meant to be the best southern Uni. The top Chinese engineers are based in Hunan province.

This is pretty much all i know really.:D

If like me History is your subject then Beijing has a world recognised institiute of Turkology, the largest outside Turkey.

Xingjang province also has an Islamic University too.:)

Re: studying in China

There are some world class institutions in China... the only problem is that in Pakistan, the awareness of this fact is non-existent and if your friend is going to look for a job in Pakistan, then people's perceptions need to be taken into account.

I've personally worked with academia and practitioners from China on various technology and business related projects, and have found them extremely well versed in their fields. Additionally, I teach many graduate students who've completed their undergrad degrees in China and they have no problems in getting admitted to Universities in North America. Language remains an issue but it can be overcome with some immersion based training and from what I know, there are a few Universities where the language of instruction is English... so I'd suggest your friend look at those specifically to alleviate language problems.

A good way to go about finding a good institution is to check the international accreditation bodies for the subject area that your friend is intersted in pursuing... e.g. AACSB and/or EQUIS for business schools and ABET for technology/engineering disciplines.

From the top of my head, these are the Universities that I know of and am pretty sure that they're well recognized the world over:

  1. Tsinghua University
  2. China Europe International Business School (CEIBS)
  3. Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST)
  4. City University of Hong Kong
  5. Fudan University

I've worked with colleagues from Tsinghua, CEIBS and HKUST... and may be able to get some additional information for you if you want.
