so deal is … i’ve scared my poor italians neighbours once already when the smoke-alarm went off while i was making parathas at like 4 in the morning!
i have a studio apartment, which is really not so big … and jab mein parathey per butter lagati houn (dont have desi ghee) … to bohat dhuan uthta hai … although the kitchen exhaust on running at full speed, it still doesnt help …
so my ritual for paratha making has become:
step one: take batteries out of smoke-alarm …
how can i avoid making my apartment a smoke hut? its too cold for a fan … and my main windows dont open so much … besides i live on the first floor, and if i opened the windows completely, it’ll be like smoke fest on display!
Re: studio apartment and paratha-making
Use man o salwa parthas. They are very good and will not cause any smoke.
LOL ours goes crazy too whenever chappatis etc are made – our poor neighbours have just learnt to live with it – we are blessed with great neighbours
Perhaps take some parathe over one day to them with a dish to accompany them – desi food always keeps neighbours sweet ;0) I am sure they will just ignore the noise…
Actually waking them up at sehri time too is a bit mean – perhaps make them in the evening and heat them at sehri? I know its not ideal but its more fair on your neighbours!
Re: studio apartment and paratha-making
ok this is realllly wrong butttt.....cover it with aluminum foil! and ta'da ....u'll never hear it again!
Does your cooker not have an extractor fan?
Re: studio apartment and paratha-making
hmmm … so far the ready-made paratha i could find were from teh turkish shop … and my god it felt like eating car-tyres!
and true it’s not fair on my neighbours … thus i take the alarm off before starting … lol … as for the foil … hahahah … :dhaagu1:
and yes my cooker does have an extractor … but ..
i dont have a proper tawa, but i cook them in a regular large non-stick fry-pan .. could that be the reason?
noooo … i remember the pakistani garage-sized kitchen to also get full of smoke when parathas were being made!
other than the neighbours … it’s bad for me too na … the dhuan takes long to disappear! not good for my eyes … ![]()
waisay is it only happening with me that there is an insane amount of dhuan .. or does that happens to others as well?
Re: studio apartment and paratha-making
Farrah, I had the same , rather worse , issue with my previous flat ... I had a simple trick, make the pratha on low heat ... that wont let the smoke rise that much. Yes it takes time to make the paratha but it really helps with the smoke alarm ...
Try it..
Re: studio apartment and paratha-making
^ and it makes the paratha crispier as well...
hey thanx CB … i’ll definitely try this … and also try to not ignore my alarm clock
today i woke up only 30 minutes before … not nice! lol ![]()
well, what i have learned is butter is just instant smoke on tawa, no matter your house is big or small.
I make the paira with butter in it and when i put the paratha on tawa, i only use olive oil. no butter.
the butter inside the paira makes the paratha crispy from inside and oil outside gives it a paratha look without extra butter or smoke. never need to take batteries out of fire alarm this way :)

Re: studio apartment and paratha-making
^ yep, it's the butter that's the culprit. I use butter for the 'paira', and on the tawa use oil instead.
Re: studio apartment and paratha-making
Guys , try putting butter on paratha on low flame ... trust me you wont experience killing smoke :@:
Re: studio apartment and paratha-making
lol … ok … first i’ll try low flame … if it doesnt work, then i’ll try olive oil … if all fails … i’ll buy a freaking better quality pan ![]()
Re: studio apartment and paratha-making
You better abondon parathas! They are not good for health. And they kill the essence of Ramadan.
Re: studio apartment and paratha-making
before you apply butter, TURN DOWN THE HEATTTTTTTT!!!! no dhuan!
:P
Re: studio apartment and paratha-making
butter ko alag boil karo or desi ghee bana lo wo jalta kum hai. or window main window fan laga lo jub parathy banany lago on kar do fan ko,,, main aisy karti hoon to dhuwaan nahin niklta
Re: studio apartment and paratha-making
Low heat is the key...CB is right.
Re: studio apartment and paratha-making
low heat did work!!! :D ... dhuan was less but not completely gone .... but then in this case, my extractor fan worked better ..... thanks CB!
i should get ghee instead ... phir shaid masla bilkul hal ho jaye ...
Usually what cooks do is to add a bit of oil to the butter. That keeps it from smoking, even at higher heat.
Re: studio apartment and paratha-making
Make only deep fried paratha , that will not create any smoke. For deep frying you will have to use lots of oil or desi ghee and when it is searing hot fry your parathas and viola your problem is solved. Try it and let me know how it works out. It is based on my observations I have no practical experience of this trick.
