that the most ridiculous topics are subjected to studies.
It’s often come to light that a study was done to determine abc or xyz and when you read about it you realize how silly the study actually was. You often walk away thinking, “They needed to do a study to figure THAT out?!”
What studies do you know of that you can’t believe they needed a study for?
^ true that… I can’t fathom how some studies get the stamp of approval and get funded - esp. in this day and age where us researchers are fighting for grant money (story of my life :)).
I think 2008 was the worst year for this… the National Post actually called it “A year of confirming the incredibly obvious” - some tidbits here.
My favs from the site:
People who exercise are less fat than those who sit on the couch,
People are intrigued by sex,
People put on more clothes when it’s cold,
Getting fired is disappointing.
A study that showed men are more instinctively attracted to curvaceous women than any other because this body shape suggests a fertile reproductive medium.
TLK was quick to add that he could have told us that for free......
hahhahhaa...in my undergrad me n my group organized a study and then research on one campus building's washbasin, (its usability testing). and to prove our points we even built the prototype (using actual plaster)
We were at a research conference earlier this year and us science researchers were pretty offended that the arts students were getting more funding than us (no offense artsy people) For example, they funded an arts student to fly in zero gravity with NASA just so she could pose in zero gravity with a brush and dustpan - the photo would be titled “taking OCD to the next level” - I mean seriously! You could have just photoshopped that! Why don’t you send researchers from our uni to NASA who are actually doing proper space-related research?
AGREED!
I think it was the guardian or independent this week, they had like 4 pages dedicated to all the possible things that may cause Alzheimers, it went all the way from how educated you are to what you eat and how prone you are to falling. Just because a correlation exists between two variables doesn't mean one is caused by another!
I read egg yolks cause Cancer a while ago, it drives the hypochondriacs crazy, WTH?

Well yeah but that's more the Darwinian way of thought than a study anyway, being attracted to a mate with a selective advantage and natural selection and what not, it's still just an absurd an idea.
studies suggest that some marriages are arranged while some marriages are love in some cultures. Some further tests indicate that sometimes they end up in life 1, specially if they are desi and if they are on gs.
Why all you people can’t appreciate the fact that such studies are important for using as ‘evidence’ and ‘references’ while you are having debates on threads on GS
