Student sentenced for "joke" in UK

BBC News - Woolwich attack: Student sentenced for ‘joke’ tweet

this is not the first time…

Similar incidents involving British Muslims students have happened before. I can’t think of a reason behind this immature, careless and insensitive behaviour? Knowing How much Islam and muslims are scrutinised in the West due to Islamophobe Sentiments…they’re supposed to be more wise than their non Muslim contemporaries as well as those who couldn’t make it to the Uni level.

Re: Student sentenced for “joke” in UK

WOW!!!

How stupid!!! Some ppl’s stupidity is so mind boggling sometimes

How could she be so insensitive? Then she went to complain about the threats she received? Now THAT is the JOKE!!!

ppl like her should not be allowed to use social media…

Re: Student sentenced for “joke” in UK

There were few other incidents discussed on GS not so long ago…one girl was jailed for writing jihadi and killing kafir lyrics, the other one was fined or something for listening to music on iPod under her scarf during a hearing. :hehe:

Re: Student sentenced for “joke” in UK

i agree that she should have held her tongue. But on the other hand, its political correctness gone mad. People have to walk on egg shells and be very very careful in what they say for fear of it being misconstrued or misinterpreted by “authorities” or the more recently the language police. In a way its killing freedom of speech because what you have now is people afraid to voice opinions cuz it may be labelled as a hate crime which is the easy option and people are i suppose over using it as a way to accuse people who have an opinion whether its good or bad. Im not referring to this incident - like i said it was incredibly short sighted of her given what the situation is these days. But im referring to the more minor incidents where people are arrested simply for stating a like or dislike of a certain politician or public figure. It has happened

Re: Student sentenced for “joke” in UK

I am not sure which incidents you are referring to. I think things are much more tolerant and easier than in other countries. Here in India we had an incident wherein we had 2 girls arrested for tweeting about the road blocks due to the death of a certain leader. I understand that you would start generalizing that these kind of incidents happen only in India, but it would certainly help if you look around the other countries as well.

Criticism for the sake of criticism is bad and people need to be thankful for the kind of tolerance that majority of the citizens observed after this brazen attack.
