Re: Strike Calls - HARTAAL

What’s the hartaal for.

actualy mujhay ye nai pata :o

here is the reason…JI announces three-day mourning to condemn

Lahore, May 12: MMA acting president and JI Ameer Qazi Hussain Ahmad has announced three day nation-wide mourning to protest against the killings of MMA workers. He lodged strong protest against the killing of 10 MMA workers in Karachi polling station firing by Muttahida Qaumi Movement workers, and asked the Prime Minister Jamali if he was really in charge of the government affairs.

“I talked to Chaudhry Shujaat Hussain but he was unaware of the incident while Jamali told me he had just seen the news on a private TV channel and was going to inquire about it,” Qazi told a hurriedly called press conference Wednesday night.

I am at a loss to understand if there was any government in place in the country or who should be held responsible for the electoral violence engineered and supervised by MQM ministers in Karachi, an agitated Qazi told newsmen. He said last week MMA had asked Chief Election Commissioner to take preventive measures of possible use of force by Sindh Government in the by elections. The CEC assured us that no Sindh government minister or advisor would be allowed to visit polling stations, but no practical measures were taken in this regard, he lamented.

Alleging that Sindh government engineered the rigging to achieve desired results in connivance of Chief Election Commissioner, Qazi said MMA would not accept the results of Karachi by elections and chalk out future strategy at a meeting of MMA supreme council besides raising the issue in the national assembly. He alleged that organized efforts were being made to support a linguistic group which had lost public support and was alleged for working against Pakistan and for separatist movement. He said such efforts were aimed at keeping that group imposed upon the people so that it could extort them and continued political terrorism.

He said all his efforts to contact CEC had failed since every time it was told that he was in a meeting. Demanding immediate resignation of the CEC, Qazi said he (CEC) should have been in Karachi in view of the sensitivity of the area but he stayed in Islamabad and refused to listen to the rigging complaints. He warned that unless CEC was made impartial and independent, no future elections could be held fair and free and democracy would be banished from the country forever.

He stressed that the use of force patronized by Sindh government using state machinery and election commission was a grave conspiracy to alienate people from elections and make them lose confidence over electoral process.

JI Ameer said those killed included 3 JI workers while the fourth belonged to JUI-F. He said about 25 JI workers were wounded while over 500 were arrested by police including an MNA Laeeq Khan who had gone to release women workers entrapped inside a polling station where Rangers had laid a siege after turmoil.

Qazi Hussain said about 50 polling stations were practically occupied by MQM people who had thrown out MMA workers and there was nobody to count and supervise counting process on behalf of MMA. He said the reports coming from Karachi suggest the rivals were being given free hand to poll bogus votes under supervision of rangers, adding that in case of fair elections MMA would have won at least two National Assembly seats.

coz of the violence…

Karachi by-poll results stayed

By Our Staff Reporter

ISLAMABAD, May 13: Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Irshad Hasan Khan on Thursday stayed the publication of official results of by-elections to three National Assembly and one provincial assembly seats in Karachi pending an inquiry into alleged ‘grave irregularities’ and violence in Wednesday’s polling.

The CEC appointed Election Commission member Justice Mohammad Sadiq Leghari to hold a summary inquiry into the allegations of irregularities in the NA-240 Karachi-II, NA-243 Karachi-V, NA-246 Karachi-VIII and PS-127 Karachi-XXXIX constituencies after issuing notices to all contesting candidates, the Sindh provincial home secretary and the provincial polling officer, a commission statement said.

It said the staying of publication of the results of the polling in these constituencies in the official gazette “till finalization of the summary inquiry” would not affect the consolidation of results by returning officers concerned.

“There has been allegations and counter-allegations both by Muttahida Majlis-i-Amal and Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) as to the commission of grave irregularities during the by-elections in Karachi, which cannot be disposed of unilaterally without hearing the contesting candidates,” it said.

The statement said the Election Commission had received 80 complaints on the polling day from both the MMA and the MQM, accusing each other of committing irregularities.

It said the MMA accused MQM workers of committing grave irregularities in constituencies NA-240, NA-243 and NA-246 by not allowing MMA polling agents to enter polling stations, burning election camps of rival candidates, forcibly trying to occupy polling booths to cast bogus votes and resorting to firing.

The MQM lodged complaints of irregularities in the same constituencies by MMA workers, accusing them of resorting to indiscriminate firing at MQM workers sitting in their election camp and stopping MQM voters from casting their votes, it said.
