Stress, Anxiety and Depression

These 3 terms are often used interchangeably. However, they are quite different.

Let’s hear some descriptions and talk about how to deal with these conditions.

Re: Stress, Anxiety and Depression

Re: Stress, Anxiety and Depression

dear Niksik,

excellent query for a psychologist:>
anxiety sensitivity leads to chronic depression. sometimes, stressors in the lives of young people, or old people can be so many that they feel overwhelmed.
one may lead to another. the graduation from the minimal hurt to a severity level when one's global functioning of all aspects of life and personal relations suffer, is reached when one's physical and mental strengths are totally used up or wasted.

everything we do, very thing we think, say, hear and undergo, has stress when the stimulating factors are not conducive to a healthy growth and development.
positive psych for instance is a relatively new sub field, in which the argument is that in fact we do better when we are a bit stressed, and in case of traumatic events, specifically when life loss takes place or one has undergone deep sense of helplessness, a pecualir resilience may take hold of that person and reshape her/him into someone very strong.

pesonally, i do agree with this a little, but when you speculate about people in war zones or under captivity or every day domestic abuse, one needs to take a look again at this theory of resilience.
each person has own life experiences and thus our individual environs will only allow us what they can. it is however up to an able bodied person, to disallow stressors from getting to negatively impact our health.
some things will be doable by people in an effort to re organize their priorities and a sense of sound values and personal reasoning based on right /wrong convictions, others will take time and patience, and a strict observance of life constructive thinking, feeling, saying and doing, if you will.
& thereby one will be able to feel less stressed, depressed or anxious. prayers and art therapy does help immensely.
doing good for others will have a great sense of positive energy running through as well.

being productively busy in the things that matter to us and that are good things in real, will indeed also enables us to feel no depression, anxiety or stress.
neurotic or psychotic mental conditions get created only when one is leaning on self pity, denial, and a sense of helplessness that is exaggerated.
any young person from any back ground can try to become less sad or upset, of only they knew what they want and then they achieve it, without feeling confused or feeling deterred by extraneous factors, whatever they might be.

i hope i answered correctly.

best,
Dushwari

Re: Stress, Anxiety and Depression

i can never be too depressed to actually get white hair/hair loss. i strongly believe that it is stupid to think and be depressed about what has already happened. you should always think about future and be positive about it.

Re: Stress, Anxiety and Depression

Once my little brother wrote a paper about it.
I guess its 3 degrees of same condition.

1-stress--- from every day routine
2-depression---when stress stays for over 24 hrs
3-anxiety------when you need actual treatment.

Re: Stress, Anxiety and Depression

sometimes depression can be a genetic trait and beyond one's control.

and you should never say never because you have no idea what life may throw your way and how you will react to it.

Re: Stress, Anxiety and Depression

you are right angel eyes, but i was talking about everyday situations that can totally stress one out. i have come through many bad situations using my 'jo ho gaya so ho gaya, stay positive and focus on future' policy. nothing can change the past, so there is no point worrying and stressing about it.

Re: Stress, Anxiety and Depression

agreed.

Re: Stress, Anxiety and Depression

I feel stress is a result of anxiety because when you start to become anxious about something(s), it leads to one being stressed about it. For good or bad. Stress is often associated with being a bad thing; although, it could very well be good. Strictly describing bad stress is termed as Distress.

Depression is a result of being overstressed over a period of time. Short bursts of depression are experienced when something sudden worries you and hampers your hope. Hopelessness and Depression are usually found hand-in-hand.

To avoid all three, you must diminish the level of anxiety one feels.

If you feel anxious:

Take a deep breath. Smile (trust me, it's a self-therapy). Stay positive, have confidence and see how you can avoid/divert the situation causing stress or resolve it altogether. Therefore, avoiding and/or diverting Stress.

If you're depressed:

Take time out. Analyze, the good and the bad. Most often a depressed individual focuses on the negative(s) more than the accomplishment. Thinking of the positives, no matter how little they maybe, will give you the much needed boost to feel good and the desire/drive to regain your self-esteem.

I would agree with A_E, Prayer relieves you of stress and workout keep you from thinking bad thoughts and being anxious.

There is a saying: An idle mind is the devil's workshop. So keep busy.

Re: Stress, Anxiety and Depression

anxiety is in relation to stage fright too right or intense nervousness. The "picture everybody in the audience naked" cure doesn't work it just freaks me out even more, who can face all those naked people before giving a speech...eeeek

Re: Stress, Anxiety and Depression

what helps me when i feel depressed is talking to someone about it, listening to good music, and eating something yummy..all after i cry for an hr =D

Everyone faces ordinary depression at some stage in their lives. If someone tells me ‘I’m depressed’, my answer would be ‘why?’ If there is a ‘good enough reason’ for a person to feel the way he is feeling, I’d call it ordinary depression. But if the reasons are not good enough, or there is no tangible reason at all for him to be in that state of mind, I’d think of it as clinical depression. It’s also possible that a person had ordinary depression but has suffered from it for so long that it’s become more serious. Genetic vulnerabilities, environment, how sensitive a person is .. all play a role.

Stress can be both good and bad. Some people work better under mild stress. You can call it effective tension. But obviously too much stress is neither good for your performance nor for your physical health.

Similarly anxiety can be as normal as stage fright, or in some cases it can become really debilitating.
