Looking at the ODI squad for Pakistan, I simply can not understand the criteria use by the current selection committe.
I remmember when this committe was chosen, strong emphasis was given on having personnel who could ‘pinch out talent from the DOMESTIC SCENE’.
Still all the new comers that we see selected for the national squad have barely played in the domestic circuit!
What about the players like Fazle Akbar, Hasan Raza, Abdur Rauf, Saeed Bin Nasir? They dominate our domestic scene yet they dont get the chance they deserve.
Whats the point of having a domestic scene at all one wonders!
Take an example of Fazle Akbar. He has been the leading bowler domestically since last 4 years or so. He has arnd 350 first class wickets yet he doesnt get an opportunity!!! I reckon he’d be a fool if he returned to Paki domestic scene for another year. I’d be looking for a lucrative contract overseas if i was him.
Today, Junaid Zia (son of the chairmain Tauqir Zia) has won a place in Pakistan’s ODI squad. He is yet to take even dozen wickets in the first class (compare this to Fazle’s 350!!!)
Let me know your thoughts please. Regardless of how good guys like Yasir Ali, Junaid Zia are- shouldnt they go and prove their worth in the domestic scene first?
PCB might as well stop having any domestic circuit at all. Its a waste of money, resources and above ‘excessive play’ is blamed for screwd up wickets.
To moderator: I feel quite strongly about this issue so please let it run as a seperate thread
Saby, Fazle was just an example. There are plenty of other players who have played superbly in the domestic season yet they just wait for the opportunity. For example, we have been hearing about Yasir Hameed for quite sometime- yet he got his chance now, at the age of 26. He has been performing consistently at the domestic scene for quite sometime now. And he could've been included in the national side earlier.
PLUS- Its interesting how you ask me to wait for guys like Saeed Bin Nasir et al as they will be given an opportunity at some time. I agree with this, but cant players like Yasir Ali, Butt and Junaid Zia- who are all teenagers- be waited? Cant they be made to play domestic season and see how good they are?
Here you have two type of potential international players:
1) Top performers in the domestic -25ish in age- reasonably well experienced
2) Top performers with some 'A' team- teenagers- no experience in domestic at all.
Pakistan has always thrown teenagers at the deep end to see if they swim, some of them did, some survived for a while, others drowned.
I m not gonna talk about the previuos selectors, lets stick to these. They immediately gave Yasir Hameed , Faisal Iqbal (consistent performers at doemstic scene) chances. Saeed Bin Nasir WAS included in the squad but right now middle order is so damn full plus Yasir at number 3 that he cant get his chance, he might get in later in the series. I Agree with the issue of Yasir Ali, but have you seen Junaid Zia??? The guy is Quick. was bowler of the tournament at youth worldcup, taking wickets in foriegn conditions as well as domestic ones. There are few players who deserve to be there and dont get a chance. You cannot satisfy everyone. Only one who i think is the most deserving is Abdul Rauf.
saby nailed it. Junaid Zia is a quickie. Don't see him as a s/o of Gen. Zia but have a look at his performance. He isn't included in the squad by ignoring our main weapons Shoaib and Sami. If one of them(Shoaib and Sami) were available, Junaid Zia's name wouldn't be in the national squad.
fazle akbar was never consistenly played for say 6-8 matches . he deserves another chance, esp on home soil where he's been doing amazing last 4 yrs. I also think if junaid was not the son of the chairman, he wouldn't hv figured in the national side so soon
i have been waiting to see fazl-e-akbar play for pakistan from a long long time....
in one ODI in england, he was called up as emergency substitute because he was already present in england....
he bowled 10 overs (straight on, was attack bowler with waqar)....
he gave only 20 runs while bowling uphill and into the wind....
his tight bowling kept england under pressure and waqar managed to grab 7 wickets bowling from the other end (downhill and with the wind)....
he is a class performer....
everytime a team is announced by the PCB, the first question my younger brother asks is "has fazl-e-akbar been named?"....

If 350 wickets cant get you into the team then what could?
Oh i know the answer- BEING THE CHAIRMAN'S SON COULD.
This selection committe is a joke!

Why can't people understand this, Waqar is gone, he is no longer as good as a bowler as he used to be.
The last time he played his best was in 2001 Natwest Series, since then he has been on the downhill.
We are looking for the future, not the past.

We r talking Fazle here dear. He has 350 first class wickets.
I don't think J Zia has been included because of his father, I have never seen him before, so i can't say anything, but he should be given a fair chance.
Just like that S Butt, F Adil too have below avg domestic performances, but they are not related to T Zia.
^^
Salman Butt and Farhan Adil were both included on recommendations. Rashid Latif thinks very highly of Farhan Adil. Farhan Adil to me looked like a good player but Salaman Butt needs to work out a bit on his game. Personally I think excessive use of bottom hand along with him being a left handed player makes Salman prone being dismissed in the slip and the point gully region.
