Re: Strange Facts

The 10000 years comment was more a good-natured dig at various faiths that date the earth to about 10000 years.

I was watching a NOVA program today - scientists in Antartica had bored down to 15 million years old soil beneath ice and water. Totally they can find up to 40 millions years old soil. 13.7 billion yrs is 13,700 million years.

How old is the earth? (with Universe being 13700 million years)

Re: Strange Facts

Fart travel time depends on atmospheric conditions such as humidity, temperature and wind speed and direction, the molecular weight of the fart particles, and the distance between the fart transmitter and the fart receiver. Farts also disperse (spread out) as they leave the source, and their potency diminishes with dilution. Generally, if the fart is not detected within a few seconds, it will be too dilute for perception and will be lost into the atmosphere forever.

Exceptional conditions exist when the fart is released into a small enclosed area such as an elevator, a small room, or a car. These conditions limit the amount of dilution possible, and the fart may remain in a smellable concentration for a long period of time, until it condenses on the walls.

Re: Strange Facts

Okay enough facts on farts :vivo:

There is enough salt in the world’s oceans to cover all the land on all the continents to a depth of nearly 500 feet!

Re: Strange Facts

How would you calculate that?

Re: Strange Facts

^

Some scientists estimate that the oceans contain as much as 50 quadrillion tons (50 million billion tons) of dissolved solids. If the salt in the sea could be removed and spread evenly over the Earth's land surface it would form a layer more than 500 feet thick, about the height of a 40-story office building. For example, when 1 cubic foot of sea water evaporates it yields about 2.2 pounds of salt.

Hope that gives you an idea. =)

Re: Strange Facts

Well, thanks, I can only count to 10 that's why asked.

This assumption would also take in to account the land area of the world. You have to remove mountains and deep valleys from it or assume the world is flat. It also assumes the depth of all sea. Then the salt content of sea water to be same everywhere. And this 50 million billion water content is just an assumption.

Re: Strange Facts

Your local library has filed report for this book being stolen.

You can return that now!!!
