I’m fat and I’m old and I’d like to be your friend." That’s what former Pakistani Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif said to Kim Barker, who is now a seasoned foreign correspondent. But she wasn’t when she started out in Afghanistan in 2002. In fact, she’d barely been out of the country when she volunteered to be the Chicago Tribune’s reporter there. She’s written a book about her experiences covering Afghanistan and Pakistan, and it’s called ‘The Taliban Shuffle: Strange Days in Afghanistan and Pakistan’.
