no offence is meant to the seraiki guppies on this board…but i have observed some strange things about the customs in that area…multan…bhawalpur…rahimyar khan…those areas…
in these areas, the custom is that the men remain at home and expect the womenfolk to earn money…the men sit at home like shehzaday sir pe teyl sheyl la k, with their hukkas on their charpais…the wife works for the whole day and when she gets home she does the housework…and if someone’s wife cannot provide properly, it is considered that the wife is inefficient, kaisi biwi hae apnay khawand ko khila nai sakti…
i have also heard of a tribe in balochistan where a similar practice of the womenfolk working and men staying at home is observed…
another thing really rampant in the seraiki belt it seems specially among people from this area is their disregard for the sanctity of the bond of nikah and proper Islamic laws regarding marriage and remarriage…soo many ppl from this area have 2, 3, 4, 5 marriages…the women dont even bother to get a divorce from their previous husbands before they get married to another man…the men have many wives, one in this pind, one in that pind, one in the city, and they all earn for him…
sounds too weird to me…
but even a syed pir from that area was saying the same thing that these are the customs in that area…this may be not true for the educated class, but it seems that among the lower income groups in the pinds these r the customs…
hmm..no offence…but just thought maybe someone might be able to share some more info on this…
I have never ever heard of such practices! It must be specific to the really good-for-nothing, honourless men. I hope some saraiki guppy gives details soon!
Let’s get a thread of our own and not further derail this one.
p.s. the hug smiley was better. This makes you look like an addict sniffing dope all day on a charpai.
Holy shcmolly. I grew up there (although I am not a Seraiki, but close enough). These customs are those of the Gypsies (called OODs in Seraiki) and not for other tribal groups of that region. But why is it such a big deal (particularly coming from so called ‘educated’ women?). Didn’t you go to school to be able to get a job and support your Husband? It’s truly amazing how little people know about their own country and customs of the land. Sareki speaking area is the most exciting (and richest) part of Pakistan – Multan once asserted an empire that ruled India – when your beloved Arabs and Persians were still climbing trees. It’s history is pre classical and more ancient (haha how about 3800 year more ancient) than slums known as the new metropolises (wont name names caz Isloos and Kareechos might take offense).
KulHaaree, calm down dude. it's this very pissy attitude of the dwellers from these small cities that keeps them from competing the big cities. So you are saying Multan was the center of civilization?. What the hell went wrong that it took a U-turn and got beaten by the people who were climbing trees at one point?
I guess there r more slums there now than in Islamabad. Too bad.
Education is so we can support ourselves not some parasite who lives off of us when he is perfectly capable of making himself useful but chooses not to. And if you bring in women who do not work and their husbands support them, well the women do take care of the domestic chores and the mens' babies and family in most cases too so its not a proper comparison.
Fungeese. When the hell was Multan beaten? Are you talking about the city that was conquered by Bin Laden (I mean Bin Qasim) in the 7th century? Seraiki is a not just Multan and it stretches well into Sindh’s arse. Alexander came there in 300 BC and was actually defeated (may be a surprise to you), and what makes you say that it is underdeveloped now? Have you ever seen that part of Pakistan?
FF. It's a myth, like so many other coming out of ignorant class of Pakistan.
KulHaree what u getting so emotional for calm down please!!! i was merely asking some questions trying to clarify some doubts in my mind i was not maligning seraikis …in fact i love the seraiki language and i love seraiki ppl they r so sweet…ofcourse U seem to be an exception joke
anwyays, thanks for clarifying that these customs exists among the OODS…thats interesting…would u be able to share more abt the customs of the OODS?
Irem, OODs is a matriarchical tribe, and yes women take the lead role as breadwinners. Men not doing squat is a myth at best. OOD men share in all household chores, as well as help in raising the kids. The Tribe is always on the move throughout Cholistan desert. Men are known to be the best weavers (date-palm) and make fantastic furniture. Polygamy has existed in this culture for time immortal, and it is seen as a norm than an oddity.
There are tribes in sub-Saharan Africa where women walk an average of 100 miles a week to collect firewood.
Finally, OODs are a very refined and cultured people. And thank you for liking Seraiki language. It is not uncommon for Shehri people to be attracted to the ‘exotic’.
thanks...fascinating.. :-) i'll look around for more info on OOD's...i'm curious to know how well the men can raise the kids when the kids are small..isnt it natural that women be the one raising the kids? can men provide that kind of care..?
and i guess their customs abt polygamy, specially the way it is rampant among the women of this area...seems un Islamic...
