:omg: what a name ..anyways here is the review
When you walk in to the theater clutching tickets for a Vinay Pathak flick, you know you are about to witness a meaningful comedy with Vinay essaying the role of a loser to perfection. Now Straight again has Vinay playing a confused loser but the flick is not at all meaningful.
Pinu Patel(Vinay Pathak) is a 30+ unmarried virgin residing in London and running a flourishing restaurant ironically called GAYLORD.:omg: Now Pinu’s aunt(Ketaki Dave) back in India has arranged a match for Pinu and he flies down to tie the knot. However the bride dumps Pinu on the D-day as she finds him terrifying because of his bad Dhokla eating habits.
Pinu heartbroken return back to London and tries to forget the most embarrassing moment of his life by working hard day and night at his restaurant. One day he meets two Indians, Kamles(Anuj Chaudhari) - a chef and a stand-up comedian and Renu(Gul Panag)- a cashier, who are desperately looking for a job. Pinu hires both of them and slowly he and Kamles become best of buddies.
Now when Kamles wins a lottery in his excitement he gives a smooch to Pinu and that day starts Pinu’s tedhi medhi story. Day by day he is more confused weather he is Gay or Straight as he starts fantasizing about Kamles. Pinu’s sexy cashier Renu adds to his woes, as he is attracted to both of his employees. Now the question is - Weather Pinu is Gay or Straight?
As Pinu embarks on the journey to discover his sexuality he gets more confused and finally the woman in his life sorts his issues out.
The Gay story loses it’s grip in the second half as director Parvati Balagopalan decides to leave it away half the way unfinished, by doing so the interesting concept makes the audience lose their interest and the flick moves towards an predictable end. The director starts the flick with a bold concept but in the end chickens out and makes it a safe bet.
However Straight does have its own dose of comedy and touching moments but most of them are overimposed on the script and doesn’t quite gel well with the story. The best moment of the flick is when Pinu realizes that being straight or gay is not only related just to sex, but shares an equal relationship with love and emotions, however the scene is not well handled by the director, as she missed the opportunity to probe the beautiful scene further.
Vinay Pathak’s performance in the flick is as usual perfect, talented Gul is wasted as the director just shows her as an eye candy and Anuj Chaudhary definitely needs some acting and voice modulation classes, but his screen presence is just fine.
Straight could have been the bold Gay flick of Bollywood, but the director herself confused, could not manage to make it work and loses a good opportunity of a meaningful bold flick. Give it a chance if you want to watch few of those good moments of Straight, or you can clearly give it a miss.
