Story of an Imam

I remember on PTV (Pakistan Television), during Muharam, there would be a program late at night about the Story of Hazrat Imam Hussain (ra)

From what I can recall, there would be a someone, wearing all black, on a small stage (usually 3/4 stairs) and he would narrate the story of Karbala & Hazrat Imam Hussain (ra).

Just wanted to know from my Shia friends here, what is the significance? When was it started? Who gets to narrate the whole incident?

A little history, comments or personal experiences will do good!

Humanity First! Though I give you the right to disagree …

Yes, PTV telecasts the ashura majlis on national television. Ahmad bhai issay majlis kehtay hein. Majalis happen all around the world, same manner, same fashion.

The person who sits on the MEMBER and read the majlis is called zakir/alim.

Majalis start with the name of allah. Then darood and then the zakir starts talking about the given topic/ayat.

These majalis are great source of information. This procedure was started by our own nabbi prophet muahammad mustafa (sww) on his way back from hujjat ul widda.
Hazoor ordered sahabas to make a member, then after sunnah-e-illahi, hazoor praised hazrath ALI (as) while more then 100,000 sahabas sat on the hot sraface of ghadeer and witnessed this great event.

Hazrat Omar was one of the few first sahabas, priviledged enough to congratulate Imam ALI (as) first n formost by saying "BUKHAAN BUKHAAN YA ALI IBN-e-ABI TALIB" (congratulations o son of abu talib, today u r made ameer of all the muslims.

So this is a breif history ahmadjee. Hope its helpful.
