No. The term "friends" can't be applied on them.
They may be good to spend few moments here & there but that is it.
I may or may not like spending time with them - depends on a lot of things.

If they know that they are fair weather friends and they do it intentionally then, they do not even deserve that, IMO.

That is why, i said, "it depends".
such as, if am with a group of people. some of them are my friends, some are my best friends while some of them aren't. Now i may spend those few hrs having fun with everyone. But thats it. I may only see most of them once a while and have good time. but i would be regularly in contact with my friends.
So i won't mind spending a few hrs once a while with everyone.
On the other hand, there may be people that I won't even tolerate.

i have to agree with AQ, any time spent in such company is a waste. most of the time the conversation is just empty sound bytes... u get nothing meaningful out of the company, all u've done is passed (wated) some time. no, i can't be bothered with such ppl.

By definition the term "fairweather friend' refers to people who cannot be relied upon in times of trouble. Your question holds the answer.

thank all for sharing your ideas about fair weather friends.
some only know that they need to drain life out of those people who are reliable.
it just goes to show their inner rottenness.
at work, in school and in general in life, such people must be left to their own devices.
they do know that they are wrong but they make themselves feel that they have no way to be human to others and be kind.
nothing can help their situation but their own live conscience which will tell them to redress all the wrongs they ever did to other people and soon as they can.
as for the one who keeps such people 'friends'. the lesson is to replace the fair weather friends with better humans.
& if ever the fair weather friend is really in trouble on their own,, then do help them still without feeling angry or vengeful.
of course this is a very hard thing to do, but for one's own clear conscience, this is the better thing to do.
may we only make god friends who know how to remain by each other side and live life interdependently with open arms and open hearts. amen.

Dushwari, wake up. this is the real world and here you don't make "deep and meaningful" contact with everyone, its both impossible and emotionally exhausting. As an adult you have to realise that different people have different skills and you cannot expect anything from anyone.

something is called personal ethics of engaging and disengaging.
see it as a crucial for haqooq-ul-ibaad or common human decency calling.

Dushwari, dont preach at us. We are functioning thinking adults with experiences and conclusions of our own. You can philosophise, umm and aaah all you like however you have to cometo terms with the fact that some things just "are". Like sometimes others are wrong, sometimes you are. The even wierder thing is that at times there isnt an answer at all.
People have different degrees of intimacy. Perhaps the fault is in you and your wrongful assessment of compatibility with an individual.
